QUESTION: Of your published titles to date, which heroine is your favorite and why?
Helen Henderson said:
Two heroines vie for the title of favorite: Lady Ellspeth of the Windmaster Novels and Glyn whose story is told in Hatchling’s Mate and Hatchling’s Vengeance.
Ellspeth was the first heroine I wrote as such. She kept her femininity despite holding what was traditionally (at least for many years in our world) a man’s job–a ship captain. What I liked about her was she had the respect of her men and we shared similar attitudes about service, loyalty, and duty.
But since Windmaster was showcased in the August Authors Dish, Glyn gets the nod as favorite today.
As to the reasons why Glyn was even considered? It is not because she and Ellspeth are so similar. Spoiler Alert! While the readers learn early on in Hatchling’s Mate about Glyn’s true gender, to the rest of the world, Glyn is a male. Not even Glyn’s oldest friends know she is actually female. Hiding her true self was forced upon her to enable her to be the bodyguard to the dragon lord Lady Lexii Belynea. And Glyn has to keep the secret for the price of disclosure is not just the lost of everything she’s ever known, but could mean the death of her friends.
I could relate to Glyn in many ways. In my younger days, I was what at the time was called a tomboy. My preferred clothes are today referred to as cargo pants, but back in the day were surplus military uniforms and combat boots. So Glyn and I share a similar taste in clothing. A marksman and skilled fighter, she was trained by the best weapons masters in the world. Swords were not my weapon of choice, a staff gave me a longer reach and I will admit to having placed a few arrows into the center ring of the target.
I wish I was as slender as Glyn, or as patient and strong. So for all the above reasons and many more unvoiced, Glyn of Clan Miller is my favorite heroine. At least as far as this month’s authors dish.

Hatchling’s Vengeance, Book 4 of the Dragshi Chronicles
[Fantasy Dragon Shifter Romance, MF]
Glyn, former bodyguard and companion to a dragon lord, is now Lady Glynnes Janaleigh, a dragon lord in her own right. And she has found her intended mate. But, finding him is only half the battle. Keeping him alive is the other when duty has other demands and Fate holds all the cards. On one card is written — A mating flight doesn’t always include the one you want.
The cult leader, the Parant, means to have his vengeance. No matter how long it takes or how many innocents die, he will kill all dragon shifters. Saving your kind—or yourself—requires more than the power of a dragon soul twin when vengeance threatens all. Not even dragon fire and talons are enough to overcome the mind control wielded by the one called—the Parant. Your only hope lies in the fact that vengeance has two paths. One is death—the other is love.
