January 2019: Fact in Fiction
~ Harley Wylde ~
CTR asked:
How much of your real life bleeds over into your books? And do you worry that someone will be able to tell the fact from the fiction?
Harley Wylde said:
For me, each book is different. There’s always some small part of myself in each book. Sometimes it’s an event that happened in my life, and other times it’s a personality trait that seeps into the characters. I think that often readers wonder just how much of a book is based off an author’s life, or if any of it is. The only question I’ve had pop up, since I write predominantly erotic romance, is whether or not I’ve tried any of the sexual situations in my books. Yes, I really had someone ask that.
Anyone who reads my books will notice that a lot of my heroines have been abused in some way. No, I wasn’t locked up and traumatized in an asylum like Kalani in Tex’s story. Nor have I dealt with prostitution like Rin did in Wraith’s book. But I have dealt with emotional and mental abuse, as well as sexual assault. I like to put my heroines in a situation that most would find abhorrent, but when they come out on the other side they’re stronger for all they’ve suffered, and they always have a happily-ever-after.
As a reader recently pointed out, my characters have often liked the scent of eucalyptus. That’s another piece of myself that’s worked its way into my books. My Nana always kept fresh eucalyptus in her home, so the scent keeps me calm and triggers happy memories. Mint is another favorite of mine that I’ve used frequently.
Most of my heroines love to read. I’ve been addicted to reading since I was a little kid. My favorite place was the used bookstore. I was maybe eight or nine when I started grabbing every R. L. Stine or Christopher Pike book I could find. Later, that love of reading helped me discover romance novels. I’ve been hooked ever since.
I can honestly say that no part of my life is 100% in any of my books, but I do take pieces here and there. For instance, I like writing MC romances because some of the earliest memories I have of my dad involve his Harley Davidson Soft Tail. My uncle, great-aunt, great-uncle, and grandfather were also motorcycle enthusiasts so I’ve listened to the rumble of a Harley Davidson or an Indian on many occasions. None of them were part of an MC, but I like the sense of family you find in a club. My characters have no one in their lives who give a shit about them, except their brothers. And once they find the right woman, they’re faithful until the end.
It wouldn’t bother me if someone were to email and ask if certain parts of my books were based on real life. Depending on the question, I might give a vague answer, but I’m pretty open about my past experiences. So far, I haven’t had a reader guess anything overly private that has landed in a book. But if it happened, I would have no problem discussing it with them. If I was trying to hide it, I wouldn’t have made it part of the worlds I create. Just seems like a good rule of thumb… if you don’t want someone to know something, don’t put it in print.

Havoc (Devil’s Boneyard MC #3)
[Erotic MC New Adult Romance]
Jordan — I spent a year in prison for a crime I admittedly did commit, but I had a good reason. I was supposed to serve a longer sentence, but a handsy guard and a pissed-off warden who wanted me to keep quiet meant I got out early. My brothers have abandoned me, and there’s nowhere for me to go. Until the hottest man I’ve ever met decides to be my knight on shining Harley. He only thinks he knows me though, and if he ever finds out I was locked up for a violent crime he might walk away. For some reason, the thought sends me into a panic. Havoc isn’t at all what I’m used to, but maybe he’s just what I need.
Havoc — No way the pretty blonde was doing hard time for anything bad. Just looking into her eyes, I can see how sweet she is. There’s a vulnerability there that makes me want to wrap her in my arms and never let her go. When I find out the same prison that nearly killed me was trying to cover up another incident, one involving the woman I can’t stop staring at — the goddess with the body of a porn star — fury flows through me. Whatever it takes, I’ll keep her safe, because if there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that what happens in that prison doesn’t stay there. Whoever hurt her will be coming, and I’m going to be ready for them. No one touches what’s mine, and Jordan may not realize it but I’m not letting her go.
WARNING: Contains some violence, a lot of bad language, super hot scenes that may require cold showers, a sassy sarcastic heroine, and a badass biker who won’t stop until he has what he wants.
