I’m wrapping up my Fetish Club series with the release of book #6 ( Awakened out August 27th), and I thought I would talk about thirteen reasons to read a series. My series is a set of two trilogies. The first three books (Captivated, Dominated, and Fallen) are about friends visiting the club to let go. The second three (Taken, Veiled, and Awakened) are about a group of writers doing some research. All six books are about people discovering that the things they thought they wanted weren’t always what they really needed.
So let’s discuss 13 reasons to read a series.
1 You get to feel like you’re in on the inside jokes. – Running gags are great. There’s nothing more fun than feeling like you’re on the inside and “getting” the joke.
2 You get to know the setting and world. – The more you visit the world of the series, like the fetish club in my series, the more you understand how it works and learn unexpected facts about it and the people in it.
3 You get to watch the characters grow. – Seeing a character arc over the course of 3-6 books can be very interesting and rewarding.
4 You get to know secondary characters when they get their own books. – I, personally, wait for that one favorite character to get their book and I savor it. After seeing glimpses of them in the other books, I know they will be fun to read about.
5 You get to see the world through each character’s eyes. – In Captivated, Tonya believes she knows herself, her friends, and the guy who comes on to her. Throughout her book, and her friend’s books, we get to see how her perceptions differ from those of her friends.
6 Sometimes you learn things that are unexpected. – The hero from Veiled, Jacob, seems very different to the people around him than he truly is. When we see him in Veiled, we see who he really is and test our own perceptions of the people around us.
7 Sometimes you learn things. – You might learn about a town, a club, a way of life, or a type of person. Over the course of a series, you become more comfortable with the setting and characters, so you notice more obscure details.
8 Sometimes you get surprised. – Maybe it’s just a pleasant change of pace or setting, but sometimes one of the main characters changes in a way that shocks you. I love the unexpected.
9 Sometimes you just can’t stop reading. – Have you ever been sorry a book ended? You wanted to spend more time with the couple? Well, with a series, you can. They will be in some of the other books.
10 Sometimes you even miss writing them – As a writer, I find myself missing old characters I loved. That’s probably the main reason I write series. I intend to release boxed sets, and I want to include two short epilogues for the stories. I’m so excited to revisit all these characters.
11 The characters pop back in to visit. – During Taken, a few faces from the first three books pop up. It’s great fun to revisit the characters you watched fall in love–and to see they are still in love.
12 The characters take on new depth. – With each time you see the characters, you learn something new about them, which helps to add depth and back story, especially in a short story series.
13 The characters begin to feel like family or friends. – You can’t wait to read the story of the character you love, and you miss them once you close the last book.
I have a few new projects in the works you can keep an eye out for. I’m working on a series about a big and beautiful matchmaking agency, a New Adult series, and something fun and adventurous. There should be lots of fun and more info coming soon.
Before I go, I’d love to leave you with a short excerpt from Veiled,
Chapter One
The chains hanging form the ceiling of the fetish club’s medieval dungeon rattled as Jacob Carter shook them. The club offered inspiration, most of the time, but these historical rooms often made him wish he wrote historical novels. He strove for a realistic facade in his novels, and these rooms were just that. He’d never have known the rack in the corner wasn’t real, even when he’d used it.
“These items are functional, but equipped with safety release buttons to prevent accidents and other unwanted outcomes. That’s why we take photocopies of everyone’s ID the first time they come in.” Ethan, the fetish club owner glanced at his hot wife as he said, “My wife and I want to be sure this is a fun and safe club at all times.”
The first time Jacob had seen Jacqueline, she’d stepped from Ethan’s office, still straightening her skirt. Jacob had walked around with a tent pole in his pants for twenty minutes.
That had ended when he’d met Angeline. Her mystery engulfed him””well, at least it occupied his thoughts more often than he wanted to admit. Now all the heroines in his thrillers had become tall, dark-haired beauties with ever-changing features and uncertain backgrounds.
Too bad she wouldn’t recognize him, even if she were at the club. He wasn’t wearing his usual mask and she didn’t even know he was coming. Normally he wouldn’t have taken the writers’ group tour, since he’d been a secret but steady regular for years, but as much as he enjoyed her mystery, he wanted to see her face. He hoped if he came on a day she wasn’t expecting him, she might not be wearing her mask. Then he might figure out why she refused to remove it.
