The day after Christmas, Quinn Higgins goes with his father to visit his Aunt Kim and her daughter, Summer McPhee. They live on Ocracoke Island, on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Quinn has only been to Ocracoke one time before, and was looking forward to having a good time with his family.
Quinn has fun looking for shark’s teeth and fishing. But he is also saddened when he finds out that Aunt Kim cannot afford to pay the mortgage and is in danger of losing her house. He has a solution, though. The infamous pirate, Blackbeard, not only stole treasure from other ships many years ago in that area, but some say he buried it on the island. If Quinn can find the long-ago buried treasure, he will be able to save his aunt’s house.
In the days that follow, Summer and Quinn go on a secret mission to track and locate the treasure. But they have to be careful as they are not the only ones looking for it. Will the treasure be lost to another fortune-hunter? Or will Quinn live up to his nickname, Boy Detective, and solve the mystery in time to help his aunt?
This was a really fun read that children (and adults) will enjoy. It was great to learn about the legend of Blackbeard and the skills Quinn and Summer use to try and solve the mystery. They make an impressive team! I would have preferred to see a bit more action in the last chapter but the story does come together nicely at the end.
