Ivy Peterson truly believes that she is nothing special, and so never reaches out to her fellow schoolmates. Her parents are important people with important jobs so she usually does not speak up when she needs their attention. Something very special is about to occur.
One evening at dusk, she spies a twinkling light in the woods behind her house and goes to investigate. What she finds is a tiny fairy in a green tunic with tiny wings. Not believing her eyes, she tries to capture it but it flies away and her mother beckons her in for supper. She ponders this amazing creature all night and decides to try to find the fairy the next day after school.
After traipsing through the woods between her home and her school, she comes upon the playground and spies the local bullies. Trying to go unnoticed, she makes her way back into the woods and gets lost. Exhausted and scared she curls up for a nap. The next twenty-four hours will change her life.
Ms. Norris has written a beautiful tale full of fantasy creatures that can make any child smile. I enjoyed the message of self-esteem this story imparts, and would definitely give it to any girl on the brink of womanhood. Becoming a teenager is fraught with hormone changes galore, but with the right attitude, most girls come out strong and confident women. It is a great read for a tweeny.
