Lahni Wahpeton is a Lakota Sioux wolf shifter from a long line of the same. She is musician, and plays with a rock band. She and her band are becoming more and more famous. She has returned home to help her family deal with an ancient evil. As soon as she is done helping her family, she will leave again. Too bad Shiloh Red Cloud keeps coming around and bothering when all she wants to do is avoid him and the pain he caused her years before when he left her.
Shiloh Red Cloud is the Chief of his tribe, but has been controlled by an elder’s council for some time, though he does not know how much or the evil that is lying in wait until Lahni returns home. He still loves Lahni, but knows he hurt her in the past by leaving. This time he has no intention of letting her go.
When Shiloh keeps trying to reach her, all Lahni can think to do is run, run to a local bar and jam with a local band, because her music was the only thing that has kept her sane over since she left her home town. Of course this drives Shiloh nuts since he still considers her his, but Lahni has no intention of allowing Shiloh to break her heart again, and it is only when they both realize that they’ve been manipulated and lied to that they can attempt to get back what they lost. However, when the council refuses to accept Lahni as Shiloh’s mate will he allow them choose his mate, or will he fight for her this time? And what will they do when they realize the evil goes back for generations and sits on the very council that Shiloh was taught to listen to and respect?
This is my first book by Ms. Noffsinger and I have to say I enjoyed it! The world building could have used some more factual information, as being someone of Lakota heritage, I could find little among the character’s information that made me identify with them as Lakota. While Ms. Noffsinger got the feel of being indigenous very well, the story could have used a few more facts about the Lakota woven into it, for example, the location, regalia, language etc. that would have helped round out the story and made it more believable was not there. Because these things were not there, it made it feel more as if the author simply picked a tribe and then made up stuff about them rather than try and find out more about the culture and how to make it fit her storyline. Despite this, the story itself is very enjoyable, the love scenes sensual and emotional, and the hint of danger did not hurt either. I also liked Lahni and Shiloh as people, and it was easy to relate to them as people, just not as Lakota Sioux. Overall, this is a good story and as long as you take it as a fantasy romance and not anything in anyway factual with regards to the Lakota, I have no problem recommending it to others. And yes, I will definitely be checking out this author’s other books!
