More and more often Ordell Rutledge wishes there was another automaton as sentient as himself. His father’s other creations are fine for the purpose they serve, although it is becoming clear that his business is failing.
No matter how safe it is, Elias Griffith is done living in the sheltered confines of Winifred’s home. Finally knowing his purpose, and setting off on an adventure is the chance he has been longing for.
Ordell has always wanted a friend to be just like him, but Elias is almost too much. Despite their different personalities, Ordell needs Elias’s help to get out of Blackwick, or he risks becoming a sex slave. Their journey to the city of Linnesse will be dangerous, yet Ordell is more concerned with a resurgence of the deadly plague. They may be upset with the way humans are treating automatons, but Ordell is not about to let his friends die if he can do something to stop it.
Ordell and Elias personify Steampunk, which is, in my opinion, an odd mish-mash of high-tech and old world. Ordell’s personality also reflects this dichotomy, with his shyness hiding a steel back-bone. Elias’s attitude is a little more edgy, although he is also fanciful at times. He and Elias make a cute couple, and their adventure is an entertaining read.
