We welcome Pamela Tyner to Coffee Time Romance. Thank you, Pamela, for taking time to speak with us. Why don’t you start by telling us about yourself?
First, I’d like to say that I’m thrilled to be here. Thank you for having me.
I live in North Carolina with my husband and our two teenage sons. After spending 15 years in the corporate world, I’m currently a stay-at-home mom/author, which allows me a good amount of time to indulge in my passions of writing and reading. I write contemporary romances that vary in heat level from sensual to erotic.
You have a new release called Finding Passion. I enjoyed reading about Sarah and Nathan. Could you tell our readers about it? Where you came up with the idea, the characters, etc.
Finding Passion is the story of a couple who are having trouble in their marriage, in large part because the wife is unable to communicate her needs and desires. The idea for the story originated after having a conversation with a friend who had faced the same difficulty. My characters, however, do have a few additional obstacles to overcome, including evidence of an extra-martial relationship.
Your first book released was Her Protector. Could you give us a blurb?
Sure!
Fleeing the law and a violent boyfriend, Tricia Stephens returns to the hometown she left years ago, never intending to return. But when Matt follows her, she has no choice but to seek protection from the one man she learned early on that she could not trust.
Clint’s sister was killed by her abusive husband, and he isn’t about to allow that to happen to anyone else he cares for. Unfortunately, their past still haunts both of them and the act of love he used to set Tricia free has destroyed her trust in him.
I noticed that Her Protector and Finding Passion both have different elements of suspense. Do you find that you prefer a certain amount of suspense in the stories you write?
I have found that often my stories do end up containing some degree of suspense. The amount of it depends on the plot of the particular story.
How long did it take you to write your first book?
Her Protector was the first book I wrote with the intention of seeking publication. It took me about two months to write it. However, after spending some time studying the craft of writing, I discovered that I had many problems with it that needed to be corrected. So, the revisions took about four additional months.
What is your writing process? Do you outline, fly by the seat of your pants or a combination of both?
I tried detailed outlining once and found that it didn’t work for me. I felt too confined by it, and I got frustrated. But I’m not a complete fly by the seat of my pants writer either. Before I start writing, I do have a basic plot in mind, and I do have a fairly good understanding of the characters—their personalities, their beliefs, their backgrounds, etc.
The editing process is an important aspect of an authors’ life. How do you define the editing process for any of your books? Do you have a routine you follow when in editing mode?
I’m lucky to have some fabulous critique partners who help a great deal by pointing out any unclear issues, scenes that need to be expanded, etc. Then before submitting to my publishers, I print out the entire manuscript and read it several times looking for additional revisions that need to be made. And finally, I go through the editing process again with the publisher.
What genres and authors would we find you reading when taking a break from your own writing?
It would be impossible to name all the authors I enjoy, because there are so many of them. I used to read mostly contemporary romances, but over the past few years I’ve add some paranormal and historical to my reading list.
Does Pamela have any pet peeves?
I have a few, but my biggest one these days is when someone uses text message spelling, such as ‘u’ for ‘you’, in anything other than a text message. It just makes me cringe.
If you could be any animal what would you be?
That’s a hard question. I can honestly say that I’ve never thought about that before. I’d probably be a cat, because they’re so self-reliant and confident, but also affectionate.
What do you do to relax and let the cares of the world go away for a bit?
Read of course. Give me a good book, a quite place to read, and a pitcher of sweet tea, and I’m a happy girl.
If you could describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
In describing myself on a personal level, I’d have to say loyal, caring, and passionate.
Is there a place you have never been to that you always longed to go?
Australia. But I’ll admit that a part of that may be because I adore the Aussie accent.
Would you like to tell us about any upcoming works in progress?
I’m currently working on a story about a woman in her mid-thirties who’s panicking over the prospect of running out of time to have children. With no husband prospects in sight, she decides to become a single parent, and she asks a male friend to father her child. He finds the idea ridiculous and is determined to talk some sense into her. However, her ‘sex with no strings’ offer has just fired the fantasies he’s harbored for her. But he knows he can never act on those fantasies, for a number of reasons.
I hope to have the story finished and submitted to my publisher by the end of the summer.
