Talking with Kally Jo Surbeck
Welcome, I like to thank you for taking the time out of your schedule to answer a few questions.
Kally how long did it take you to get your first book published?
The first book I sold, was not the first book I wrote so this is a bit of a tricky one for me. I
have always written poetry and short stories (several of which are published), but until 2000 I had never tried a novel. I took the hard route and wrote a 400 page back story to the first book in my Such As These (High Fantasy) series. The first book I sold, my summer release from Loose Id, For The Love Of… was written last summer.
How did you feel the day your book was released?
Well, since it had not yet released, I will have to hold out on this one.
Do you have a writing schedule?
I prefer to write at night. I have never been a morning person. Days there are too many interruptions. Everyone else is busy and needing things done. The night is my sanctuary.
What are some of your hobbies?
Besides reading? I am very involved in RWA, CRW, KoD, HTHRW and my crit groups. However, if you mean outside of literature, I like to fish. I don’t want to take the fish home, nor clean it, but I like sitting out in the middle of a lake in the warm sunshine. I love travel, meeting new people and steeping myself in the areas history. The cinema plays a large role in my life. I am on a dart league. Actually, I am up for most any good time.
Have you ever had writers block?
If so what have you done to get through it. I would like to think everyone has at some point in time. Mine generally involves deadlines. Never having been much on authority, as soon as I am told I must…a little brick wall slams up in my mind. What I normally do, is work on something else until the project that needs me is ready.
Are you working on any writing projects right now?
Wow, what a loaded question that is. I have several projects. I am currently finishing up a short fantasy/Historical entitled Sudden Fall for Triskenlion Publishing Sudden is a very lyrical, medieval story about Hafwyen of The Flowers, heir to the Thrown of Yadderwal. She has met her soulmate through dreams. If she cannot find him claim him, the world will fall to ruin. Also, I am about halfway through with She Blinded Me With Science…Fiction. Blinded is a humorous contemporary, very much in the chick lit vein. Bianca and her best friend Gertie got to Las Vegas to participate in a Star Trek convention. Bianca meets the love of her life, but tries to convince him the stunning Klingon Officiate he keeps running into is not her 🙂 Also in the pipeline are the next for in the Luck of The Irish series, of which For The Love Of… is the first. And my three books in the Such As These trilogy. The first in this series, I am pleased to announce, No Neutral Ground has finaled in the prestigious Daphne du Maurier contest sponsored by the Kiss Of Death Chapter.

Who are your favorite authors?
It is so difficult to pick a favorite author. To me this is like asking an artist to choose only one color for the rest of his life. I, of course, adore my crit partners work: Lena Austin, Cyndi Friberg, Jan Snyder, Michele Chambers, Pamela Clare. Melissa Schroeder’s work is fun and exciting. My keeper shelves hold works by: Julie Garwood, Kat Martin, Sharon Mingerey, Rogenna Brewer, Amanda Quick, Gennita Low, Sherrilyn Keynon, Karen Marie Moning, Pamela Clare, Christine Feehan, Glenna McReynolds, Judith McNaught, Jude Deveroux, Dara Joy, Claire Delacroix, Catherine Asaro, Jo Beverley, Patricia Cornwell, Tom Clancy, James Patterson, Michael Critchon. I know I am missing several, but those are the ones glaring at me.
How long have you been writing?
My first poem was published, I believe, when I was 12.
Do you have any thing to add?
First, I would like to thank you for all you do. Not just for me, but for all the authors you touch. I’m certain your readers thank you for the new excitement you bring into their lives as well. Secondly I would like to tell you a bit about my upcoming release, FOR THE LOVE OF… For The Love Of… is the first in a five book series tongue in cheek entitled Luck Of The Irish. The LOTI men and women all have the common thread of Ireland coursing through their veins, some in more potent force than others. Still, these heroes and heroines, through thin or flush, good luck or bad (mostly bad) approach life with dogged determination and humor, overcoming insurmountable odds and living happily ever after.
FOR THE LOVE OF… Some people do it for the love of money. Some for the thrill. Still others do it for the love of the kill, but they do it for the love of each other. Mackenzie Harmon is a woman in a man’s field, but she’s the very best assassin money can buy. A slight wrench has been thrown into her latest assignment. A third party has stopped her finalization of the contract. Until she can find and eliminate the mysterious man, she doesn’t get paid. Getting paid mean she can’t get out. Getting out means she gets even. Getting even is her only desire until she meets him. Gabriel Zumbrenen is also an assassin, but for half the money. He’s been sent in to handle the removal of a CEO of a major medical corporation. The man who had the contract before him, Mac, has failed. Gabe’s job is to clean up the mess.
I hope you will come check me out. Give it a shot 🙂 You might like it.
