Rosemary is heir to the bank in her Kansas hometown. Since her mother’s death, she has been on a Grand Tour. She has always been a disappointment to her beautiful socialite of a mother, but is determined to stand up to her stepfather.
Will “Waco” McClain is a Texan and proud of it. He and his friends have to come up with a large amount of cash for the Confederacy, due to a dishonorable commanding officer’s orders and his refusal to obey.
Four Texans ride into Kansas to help refill the coffers of the Confederacy. But instead of robbing the rich bank in town, they are forced to kidnap the banker’s daughter. Little do they know that within a short time Rosemary will own the bank outright if she is still alive, and that her unscrupulous stepfather is happy to have her out of the way. Godfrey fails to take into consideration the honorable natures of Rosemary’s kidnappers, and underestimates her grit and intelligence.
This story is set in a very turbulent time in our country’s history and the author does a great job of describing both the setting and the people. Rosemary’s fantasies are interesting, but she soon grows up as she falls for Will. Will is a bit over scrupulous for a kidnapping bank robber, but very likeable and Rosemary is tough and resourceful despite her daydreaming. I liked the plot with its references to actual historical events and the realistic way she told this love story. Godfrey is a wonderful old-fashioned type of villain, and not as smart as he thinks he is.
