Anne Davenport is a beautiful and accomplished young lady. She has been managing her father’s household since she was very young and has no doubt that she can manage her own life without a man.
Nate, Marquess of Haywood, is a very handsome but overly responsible young man. His mother’s request that he look after his not very much younger cousin has caused him to put off his own life.
Spinster House is once again empty and three local ladies are vying to be its next tenant. One of those women, Miss Anne Davenport, is worried about her future. Her father is on the verge of proposing to a much younger woman, leaving her redundant in the home she has managed since her mother’s death. She has no desire to marry any of the local men, so Spinster House seems her only option. Lord Haywood has been charged with keeping his cousin Marcus alive and single. A curse on Marcus’ family has ensured that each duke dies before his heir is born. He has had no time for a life of his own. Now Marcus seems very interested in one of the spinster candidates and Nate finds himself unable to stop thinking about Lady Anne.
It is never a mistake to pick up one of Ms. MacKenzie’s novels. The characters are entertaining and well-drawn and the plot is always full of amusing twists and turns. This novel is no exception. Nate and Anne have both been saddled with unreasonable responsibilities at an early age and are having a hard time letting go of them. Love is definitely not part of either’s plans for the future and I had a really good time reading about their unexpected romance. I have purchased the previous two stories and look forward to reading them also.
