Arion is a wolf shifter and also Vane a vampire’s mate. Twenty years before he left Vane, even knowing he was Vane’s mate because of trust issues. He has been gliding along in life without much purpose, until Vane’s younger brother arrives, and says that Vane has the Dissolution, a disease that only vampires get, and which kills them unless they drink from their fated mate.
Vane knows the Dissolution is going to kill him, it is just a matter of when. As much as he would love to see his mate Arion, he will not break his promise to his mate that he will never try to find him. Fortunately for him, his family refuses to give up.
When Ash, Vane’s baby brother, and his bear shifter mate Locke show up and tell him that Vane is dying from the Dissolution, Arion knows he must go to his mate. As hurt as he was by Vane’s distrust, he cannot allow the man who is his mate to die. In fact, knowing he is going to see Vane again, almost feels like waking up from a twenty-year nap where he just existed, but nothing else. His emotions come alive and he heads out, deciding to use his wolf form to get there faster. When he arrives he is stunned to see how frail and ill Vane looks, and offers his blood right away. But Vane is skittish, and though he takes Arion’s blood and begins the long road to healing, he does not really understand or believe Arion’s reasons for being there, for seemingly forgiving his betrayal of twenty years before. Will Arion be able to convince Vane that he wants to try again? That he is willing to have a relationship, not just with a man, but with a vampire?
As is usually the case with Ms. Medina’s books, I absolutely loved this story! Of course I have always been partial to the “gay for you” theme, but Ms. Medina always does it so well. It was very cool that Arion was completely honest with Vane about not being attracted to men, or in love with Vane in the beginning, but that he was open to the idea and willing to try and see where their relationship led. The love scenes when they happened were awesome, and very hot, and emotional. That is always a key thing with Ms. Medina’s stories, the emotion and it makes them some of the best m/m romance out there. If you love stories set in fantasy worlds, if you love vampires, and shifters, and m/m romance, then you will not want to miss the second installment in The Year of Suns!
