QUESTION: What inspired you to write your debut novel?
Rachael Richey said:
I’ve been writing stories ever since I was a small child; firstly about my teddies and dolls, and then about a whole school of imaginary children. From there I progressed to writing poems and short stories, always with the aim of writing a full length adult novel. I started one back in the mid-nineties with great plans for it becoming a best seller before the year was out. It made it to about 60k words (which took about ten years by the way), when I realised I had twenty eight main characters. Hmmm… a few too many maybe? I’m pretty sure a publisher would think so!
During the writing of that book, I had several vague ideas for other stories, some of which I made notes about. One of them I actually wrote the first chapter, and then abandoned it for about five years until one day, early in 2012, I suddenly had the idea for a scene for that book. It was quite a dramatic and emotional scene, and in the event it never made it into the book itself, but… it inspired me to sit down and write the rest of the story. I began in February 2012 and finished it by the end of May. All 103,000 words of it. I was absolutely gobsmacked. I had actually finished writing a whole, full-length adult novel. And it had been quite easy. Of course then the difficult bit started. I had to edit it. And edit it again. And again, and again…. and so on. But it was all worth it, and I fell so much in love with the characters that I decided they needed a sequel. At present they have three sequels – maybe there will be more to come.
So, basically, I guess the thing that finally inspired me to write this particular novel, was just one little scene that popped into my head. A random scene from a part imagined story, that stuck in my head and wouldn’t leave. I’m very happy that it did because I haven’t stopped writing since, and I love it.
