January 2019: Fact in Fiction
~ Marie Tuhart ~
CTR asked:
How much of your real life bleeds over into your books? And do you worry that someone will be able to tell the fact from the fiction?
Marie Tuhart said:
It really depends on the story, but yes my real life does sometimes bleed over, especially if I have a dog in the story. I use my dog Penny, a four pound toy poodle, to describe the dogs antics. I also pull things out of the memory banks of other dogs I’ve owned. Places I’ve visited I’ll pull out pictures I’ve taken to describe them. I’ve used family dinners in some books, not that anyone in my family would notice.
I have pulled some personal experience for some of my erotic romance clubs. Yes, I have visited a couple of BDSM clubs. When I first started writing, I wrote how I wanted to be treated in a BDSM relationship, I’d also read tons of books.
I had started reading some non-fiction books on BDSM, and took some classes. I had an opportunity to visit a club and a party, and I took advantage of it. I’m not going to say it was a mistake, but I will tell you it was an uncomfortable experience for me and the people I was with. It was nothing like I’d built up in my head. I was glad I was with other people and not alone.
A couple of years later, I had the opportunity to visit another club in a different state through a conference I was going to, I was nervous so I asked someone I knew who had gone the previous year. She told me I would be fine. That it was a good place.
I’m glad I went, because it was totally different from what I first experienced. More like what I was expecting and a lot more education, people willing to talk to you and not look at you wondering why you were there.
I try to incorporate those experiences into my books, and I doubt anyone but people who really know me and were with me during this time would recognize any of it.

6 years agoInteresting…some of my true life bleeds into my books as well. I’ve never been to a BDSM club, though. Fascinating! Love, love, love the cover. Congrats and best wishes!

6 years agoResearch can be a fun part of writing, but you’ve really taken research to a higher level! (or is it a deeper level?)

6 years agoThat research explains why your BDSM stories feel so embedded in the life. Well written and emotional and you take on some deep subjects. I always have a happy sigh as I finish one of your books. I love happy endings. 🙂

6 years agoYou know what they say, you write what you know or experience. But I believe you’ve taken that to a new level. Research can be fun yet daunting. Best of luck with Highland Dom. Its on my TBR list. (Love the cover)
