Who was your hardest character to write? And why?
N.J. Walters said:
Like all writers, sometimes there is a character who is a bit more difficult to write than usual. To be honest, it’s usually the hero. Men can be stubborn. Sometimes they’re very complex and it takes quite a bit of time to get to know them. Louis LaForge from Wolf on the Hunt, book five of the Salvation Pack series, was like that.
The brother of the alpha, Louis stayed more in the background in the first four books of the series. With their former pack attacking at every turn, he sees it as his job to protect all the other men and their mates. Protective and loyal toward his brother and their small pack, he seemed content with his role.
But underneath it all I sensed his deep yearning for a mate of his own. Only he didn’t believe it would happen. And with the threats to the pack, he didn’t think it would be safe for him to have a mate. To say Louis was conflicted is an understatement.
He may not be alpha but Louis is far from powerless. In fact, he could be alpha of a pack if he chose to. So when forces converge, he’s left with a whole lot of choices to make, none of them easy.
Which meant my job wasn’t easy. Writing for me is like taking dictation. I’ve always said the characters speak and I write. It’s as simple as that. Only Louis wasn’t always talkative. Nor was he always certain of his choices.
In the end, the struggle was worth it. Louis LaForge is a hero worthy of the name. Fierce, primal, sexy, protective, and able to put the needs of others above his own. He won’t start a fight, but when the attack comes, he’s determined to finish it once and for all, making Wolf on the Hunt a very special book and Louis a very special hero.

Wolf on the Hunt (Salvation Pack)
[Paranormal Romance/Werewolf]
Gray Everson is sure she’s found the perfect quiet place to work on her paintings, until hunters start shooting up the forest around the cabin she rented and she finds a wounded wolf. But the animal she hides from the hunters is no regular wolf—he’s something Gray never imagined could be real.
Louis LaForge’s focus has always been on protecting his pack, but the instant attraction he feels to the artist who saves him changes everything. There’s something about Gray he can’t figure out—until he gets close enough to touch her. He knows pushing Gray too far, too fast is risky, but there are still hunters around, and his former pack is coming for him. There’s only one way to protect everyone he loves.
