February 2019: Hardest Character

CTR asked:
Who was your hardest character to write? And why?
Franny Armstrong said:
The hardest character to write would be my villain. I’m what you’d call a ‘nice’ person, and don’t understand people when watching the news. How can you kill, maim, or hurt others? My characters get into all kinds of trouble, but I do find it interesting to see how bad they can be.
When writing, I find it rather difficult to create the worst of the worst people, but take it on as a challenge. When I wrote about a woman villain, she held all the characteristics that I lack. I suppose it can be fun to write about the things I would never do, but I find it difficult and struggle with the scenes. I’m sincerely hoping that they are as realistic as I can make them, and that my readers understand that it’s never the real me in the tale.
In my Author’s Beware – The Love Is To DIE For series, I created a man who was bad to the bone. He made me cringe. Of course he gets what he deserves in the end, but writing his demise scene gave me a sense of satisfaction that he finally had to stop and suffer the consequences of his behavior. His interactions with his minions were harsh, which is nothing like me. I believe in paying it forward, but he seems to take it backward. I have to ask why the minions follow such bad people in the first place. I personally wouldn’t allow someone to treat me so poorly.
I suppose it’s all in how you look at it. People have good points and bad. I found it hard to create him because he is the opposite of my beliefs and challenges. When he ‘gets his’, he is far from rehabilitated by learning from his mistakes. It’s sad to think there actually are people like him in the real world.
