QUESTION: What is the one piece of writing advice that has stuck with you and why? (Something other than ‘write what you know.’)
Regan Walker said:
When I first heard a fellow writer say “Write what you love to read” I was happy as my favorite and most often read romances are the deep historicals, just the kind I love to write.
But for the day to day business of writing, when I’m stuck and don’t quite know how to proceed, I go back to the beginning of the story and read to where I stopped and then I begin to write whatever comes into my head or the characters’ mouths. It seems to work.
I’m not a plotter but let the history lead me and that, too, often works. If you expect those dry days, those moments when the muse deserts you, you can push on to the finish. Just forcing yourself to write can often lead to a great scene.
