Travis Prescott is a Texas Ranger who always gets his man, even when it costs him the use of his gun hand. Adrift in a frontier town with no one but his horse and his dog for company, Travis considers settling down to ranch. As he gears up to make a land run, he finds himself inundated by a ragtag group of cast off orphans begging for a handout.
Violet LeFarge is a saloon girl wishing for something more. When she stumbles upon a group of children waiting for the orphan train, she cannot help but take them in. Disguising herself as the eldest of the youngsters, she finds a likely hero in Travis. If only she can convince him to take them along for the ride.
Travis and his ready-made family settle into a sleepy town right across the Texas border. As if trying to raise five kids isn’t trying enough, Travis also has to dodge the matchmaking attempts of half the town. It is Violet who makes a warm and loving home for them all, and Travis finds himself drawn to her. The more they get to know each other, the more Travis realizes she is not the child he thought she was.
Though the idea of a hero like Travis taking in a group of orphans is intriguing, it is tempered by the fact that Violet’s relationship with him begins with her playing the role of his adopted child. At times the both of them seem so obtuse it is a little frustrating. And in the end, it is the children who are the real heroes.
