What It’s About: A witchy stranger with no memories appears amid the coal mines of Virginia, setting up a clash of industry and nature.
Why I Love It: Though Appalachian fiction, particularly speculative fiction, is having a moment, this is one of the most original books I’ve ever read. This lyrical, hauntingly beautiful queer fantasy is so well written, it’s hard to believe it’s a debut. The landscape is a character of it’s own, atmospheric and vivid. Plus, I am OBSESSED with the gorgeous cover art.
Read If You Love: Historical fantasy, folkloric horror, queer Southern Gothic lit, witches, dual timelines, atmospheric settings, lyrical prose.
