I’m not sure whether I mentioned this, but at the end of April I started a book journal. I’d seen so many outstanding ones on YouTube and on a Discord that I joined. I decided this would be a fun outlet that would let me use different creative muscles than the ones I use when I write.
I had an 8 x 8 dot grid notebook, and I went to work setting it up. I felt excited at the appearance of the finished title page and index. The bookshelf pages weren’t as outstanding, but I’d printed those out on copy paper and simply glued them in. I wasn’t going to draw in all those books by hand.
And then I started reading. I created some book pages in the journal…and, well, they were a brutal disappointment.
The vision I had in my head is not what I made.
The scrapbook paper I used bulked up the hardcover notebook, and I needed to alternate top and bottom. I didn’t have any ephemera to decorate the pages. For example, on the hockey book I read, it would have been nice to have some hockey stick, puck, and ice skate stickers. And my book cover stickers didn’t print out as nicely as I’d hoped.
Note to self: Use the inkjet printer for the book cover stickers, not the laser printer.
I’m planning to keep going and finish up the journal this year, even though it’s not pretty. Next year, I’ll try out some new ideas that occurred to me. But darn, I wish I had some artistic talent.
