I must confess that I’ve always wished I could shift. Running through the forest as a wolf, sneaking around the room as mouse to listen in on conversations, or flying through the air as a hawk or an eagle took up a hefty portion of my childhood dreams. I love reading and writing about shifters mating non-shifters probably because I secretly hope that those shifter powers rub off on the mate.
But as we all now, even if a little magic rubs off on the mate, it may not always happen in the way we expect. I decided to explore this idea in Fires of Justice. Since Cullen’s and Calista’s energy patterns join, Cullen energy leaves a magical residue in her bloodstream.
Let’s watch and see what happens when she figures out how to access it.
Her eyes closed. She stretched to access the magical residue left by the mating, using it to darken her hair and eyes, raise her cheekbones and add an olive hue to her skin. I look like my aunt about fifteen years ago.
Wow, your aunt was a babe.
Yes, she was. Let’s see if it works on Richard.
His face between her hands, she forced his gaze on her. “Trust me, Richard. You did so once.” She pulled her sweater down to reveal the infinity tattoo. “See? I was marked for this.”
A glint of recognition flashed. “Esmy? Can it be?”
So while Calista doesn’t shift, she can play somewhat with her human features. Maybe she can’t turn into an animal, but I think that would still be a pretty cool trick.
How about you? If you could shift, would type of abilities would you like to have and why?
