Valves & Vixens is erotic romance that mixes both the escapism and fantasy of steampunk with the Victorian style. Many writers have worked in the genre of steampunk from Jules Verne all the way to H.G.Wells and with this book the genre gets a good warming up. The stories within reflect a wide mix of backgrounds and settings all linked by the presence of steam at their heart. With a multitude of pairings and heat levels there really is something for everyone.

I love hearing from other writers where they get their inspiration for their stories. Valves & Vixens was no different as soon as I had accepted the stories I asked the authors to send me a short inspiration post.

Boson’s Mate by Nikko Lee –
While I love the aesthetics of steampunk, I’m also fascinated by stories about people pushed to the edges of society. Boson’s Mate was inspired by Nicole Gestalt’s tantalizing submission call and two of my favorite short stories.
In Jay Lake’s sci-fi short story Torquing Vacuum, the sexuality of Domitian Spanich is secondary to his socio-economic status as a mechanic that is sharply contrasted with the genetically-engineered ruling class. Sadly, Jay Lake passed away June 2014 after a long and public battle with colon cancer. Genevieve Valentine’s The Zeppelin Conductors Society Annual Gentlemen’s Ball is grounded in steampunk fundamentals with helium airships in a Victorian setting. The very technology that keeps these airships aloft exacts a heavy toll on their conductors who are deformed outcasts despite their essential function.

…my father-in-law (who shall remain nameless; in fact, I’m keeping all the details vague purposely) designed and built a “fucking machine” in the 1970s. The mechanical components were housed in a clear plastic rectangular box so one could see the machine at work. It was used in pornographic films, and, as the lore goes, when not in use was stored in the family garage covered by a blanket. About a decade or so ago, it was sold to a pornographic filmmaker for his collection of such devices.
I’ve always wanted to use this curious contraption in a story. But a contemporary setting would have made it seem too porny, and it’s really not appropriate for a historical setting. And then I saw the call for submissions for a Steampunk anthology and my brain had a revelation: make it steam-powered and put it in a stylized late Victorian setting!

I’ve always been interested in the end of the Victorian age and the beginning of the Industrial revolution. As an erotic writer, it seemed appropriate that this time period should provide an apparatus to act as a forerunner to the Sexual Revolution as well, a kick-start to great erotic devises to follow.
