I’ve loved books since I was old enough to read. I was one of those people that hid a flashlight so that I could read after I was told to turn off my lights and go to sleep. It was tough since my parents aren’t the type to read just for enjoyment, but my grandmother loved to read and she always understood when my nose was stuck in a book ““ because her nose was in a book too.
One of the great thing about books ““ and there are many ““ is that the reader can be transported to any place and time through the pages of a book. If I want to visit any area in any time period, I just need to find a well written book set in that time and place. What other “trip” can you take for so little money?
As a kid, I dreamed of being a published author. In 2006, I realized that dream when my first books were published. As an author, I know how much I enjoy a well crafted setting in a well written book. On the other hand, I know how much I dislike reading a book when the author didn’t do sufficient research.
This is an example ““ there is a very well known author that I’ve read for years. One of the books was set on Cape Cod and it had a vivid description of a house on a high cliff overlooking the crashing waves and a winding ocean front road that lead to this interesting centuries old house. When I got a chance to visit Cape Cod, I decided to look for the area. I discovered the town isn’t on the ocean side of Cape Cod and there are no tall cliffs? These were details that could’ve been changed easily to make it accurate, but the author didn’t take the time.
One of the things I strive for in my novels is to give the reader an authentic view of the areas where my novels are set. This does require more time and effort, but “making it real” is such a great thing to do for the readers and for myself. I read books set in all sorts of times and places, but so far, my novels have been set in locations that I have visited. I’ll share details about the settings for both fiction series I’m working on a little later on. I hope you will come back to read more.
