8. River levels fluctuate drastically throughout the year. Sometimes the river is a formidable obstacle, but much of the time it’s easily waded.
9. Nyla’s mother is her greatest inspiration despite her lengthy incarceration in the Facility.
10. Nyla’s grandmother primarily raised her and she has secretly refused to abandon forbidden practices, unwittingly encouraging Nyla’s rebellious spirit.
