Not exactly a romantic title, is it? But did I grab your attention? I hope I did.
Greetings to all! I hope you are having a fabulous 2011. Is it me or does every year seem to pass by faster than the last one? Where’s the time machine when you need it?
My name is Mary Abshire and I’m here to chat with you for a bit. I live in Indiana and I’m a part-time Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy Author. The paranormal has always been an interest of mine. In my youth, I grew up watching sci-fi and horror shows. I started writing for fun in my twenties, but never pursued a writing career. Now that I am much older, I can. Love for the dark, mysterious, dangerous, and out of the ordinary is part of my soul.
Besides reading and writing in my spare time, I enjoy chatting with others with similar passions. If you want to chat, drop me a line!
Moving forward, I’m here to talk about my first published book, Claiming the Evil Dead. Don’t be fooled, it’s a paranormal erotic romance, not a horror novel.
My lead character, Jessie, is a half-demon who is trying to fit into the normal world. She has a secret that very few know about””she can catch evil spirits and send them to hell. She thinks she’s destined to spend eternity in hell, because of her demon blood, but she has a lot to learn.
Enter a vampire named Drake. He works for an organization that monitors vampires and offers her a job. An evil vamp is preying upon children and it’s time to end his days on earth. Though she doesn’t trust any supernatural creature, she accepts Drake’s offer.
As they search for the evil vamp in Chicago, Drake and Jessie begin to open up to each other through some compromising. Over time, Jessie realizes not all vampires are killers and Drake discovers love that he never thought possible after eight centuries. (Let the sparks fly)
After Jessie has a near fatal experience with vampires and the evil vamp they are hunting abducts another child, Jessie turns to Jeremy, a hot demon she bumped into. She makes a deal with him for his help to find the evil vamp. Drake disapproves of Jeremy, but is unable to stop Jessie. When the time comes to save the child’s life and claim the evil vampire’s soul, Jessie must decide whom she can trust””a vampire who cools her feverish desires, or a demon yearning to seduce her.
Claiming the Evil Dead is the first in what I call “the Soul Catcher” series. The second, Catching an Evil Tail is coming 2/21/2011 and the third, Fighting Evil, is coming 3/21/2011 from Noble Romance Publishing. With so many evil souls to go after in this world of ours, I hope to keep the series running for a while.
Here is a short excerpt:
Jessie Garrett,” he said, capturing my attention. His eyes remained pointed at the road. “Twenty-four, single, computer technician, paranormal investigator. . . .” He paused, directing his attention to me.
Maintaining my composure, I stared back at him and waited for him to say the word.
“Demon.” He finished.
“That’s not on my birth certificate.”
His lips twitched. “You’re a mystery to me.”
“Let’s keep it that way,” I replied smugly.
I shifted one leg over the other. From my peripheral vision, I saw him watching me. I wore a knee-length, black skirt with small, blue floral designs and three-inch black sandals. I selected the skirt thinking I would stay cooler. Now that I realized I had exposed my bare legs to his eyes, I wished I’d selected jeans.
“I have met a few demons in my existence, and I have to admit that none compare to you.”
What a sweet compliment, I thought. Maybe he has a warm personality hidden within that cold body of his. Maybe.
“Tell me, Jessie Garrett, where have you been hiding all these years.”
“You followed me and seem to know a lot about me. Why don’t you tell me?” I pressed my lips shut and stared at him, waiting for an answer.
“How about a deal?” he asked.
“Another one?”
The veins in his hands rose as he gripped the wheel. “Consider it an exchange. You tell me about yourself, and I’ll tell you whatever you want to know about me.”
His proposal appealed to me, considering I was stuck in a car with him for the next three hours, and I had limited knowledge of vampires. With the opportunity to learn more staring me in the face””literally””how could I say no?
“Okay,” I said with a shrug. “But I get to ask the first question.”
He grinned.”Always a concession with you,” he said, while he set the cruise control at eighty-five.
I flashed a smile at him. He should have known that bargaining with a demon was never easy.
