No, I love that you’d be more floored by meeting the fan than the fan themselves.
I’ve met a few authors, and they’ve all seemed as grateful to meet me–the stalker um, fan–as I was to meet them. Well, I’ll admit they didn’t run around, jumping up and down screaming my name, but if they had I’d have ran away without getting buying their book. I’m much more comfortable being the crazier person and I’m not going to apologize for that.
On e-books. Some do pooh-pooh them, I don’t know why, there’s no paper to associate with that icky toilet function. I love them. You buy the e-book and *wham!*, you’ve got it as it’s well-known fact that I’m an impatient soul. More importantly, a cheap one, so no shipping cost! I have found that e-book companies are willing to take on authors with new ideas, sometimes to their detriment, but often they get lucky and have some wonderfully fresh authors in their stable. Their turnaround time is fast because they accept email submissions so, the reader gets their series ‘fix’ a lot quicker too.
Don’t get me wrong, I love print. There’s nothing like going into a store and picking up a book. The smell, the feel, even the taste when you lick your fingers to turn the pages makes me happy. But I feel there is more than enough room in the publishing world for both. Look around, there is still VHS and DVD for movies, still cassette and CD for music, while some would think one makes the other obsolete and I’ll admit the above former of both are slowly being phased out, it doesn’t have to be that way. It’s just another way of recording media. I’m not going to get into the argument of which is ultimately better because I love both.
Storage wise, e-books win I can store hundreds on those little keychain sized drives. However, on days when I need comfort and want to lie in my bed curled up with an ‘old’ friend that I’ve read a hundred times, well, paperbacks will win, dog-eared pages down.
