More Cloak and Dagger After Midnight

I thought I would get in one more blog post today. Tomorrow I will be blogging about the art of spycraft. I hope you can join me then. I promise it will be intriguing. In the meantime, here is an excerpt from the novel I’m currently working on. The title may change, but for now, it is SPIDERS. It’s a crime thriller with strong romantic elements. This excerpt is for the romantics.

EXCERPT FROM

SPIDERS

The whistle of an approaching train broke through the music and chatter and clinking silver. A black locomotive rumbled past the windows, its lights blurred by rain that streaked the glass. Hayden picked up his whiskey and turned back to his deputy. “You look beautiful tonight, Megan.”

“Thank you. You’re pretty snazzy yourself.” She reached out and adjusted his tie, letting her hands linger on his neck and the top of his chest a little longer than necessary. She cleared her throat and stepped back. “But I’d swear you’ve been trying to hang yourself with this. Every time I’ve looked at you, you’ve been tugging at this thing like a noose. Now it’s halfway to your back.”

So she’d been watching his table too. That thought pleased him… almost as much as the feel of her hands against his chest.

She dropped her gaze and turned away. “So, who are all these people? I barely recognize anyone.”

Hayden followed her stare, looking past the wooden boundaries of the cozy bar.

“Most of them are from Chapel’s police department, but there are some officers here from Julian as well. Plus the odd politician — their number, not their personality — and family members. If it were just the Talipatche Sheriff’s Department, we’d be a pretty straggly group.”

Hayden studied the people he saw only a few times a year. They had separated into clusters. Cops stood with other cops. Civilians gathered around other civilians. The politicians moved among everybody. Most of the LEOs were huddled in corners, no doubt talking shop, telling either their most humorous or their most hair-raising tales from the street—either that or they were discussing their latest firearm purchases or the stupidity of politics and their superiors.

“Do you mind if I ask you a personal question, Hayden?”

“Depends on the question.”

She hesitated. “Maybe I’d better not ask then.”

“Can’t stop now, Megan. You’ve made me curious.” He almost said you’ve aroused my curiosity but stopped himself. He was trying not to think about how much she aroused him.

“What’s going on with Emma? She’s been crying all night.”

He turned back to the bartender and ordered another whiskey. He hadn’t expected that.

“Her dog died,” he answered.

She was silent, obviously not believing his answer and not finding it funny enough to laugh at.

He sighed. “I’ve been trying to break things off with her for a year. She finally realized I was serious. She’ll be fine. She’ll lambast me in the newspaper and skewer me at board meetings, but she’s a big girl. She’ll get over it.”

“I thought it was something like that.”

“Yeah, it’s exactly like that.” He drank his third whiskey and stared at the empty glass. “I haven’t seen you dancing tonight. Don’t you dance?”

She looked relieved at the change of subject. “I love to dance, but I usually dance Cumbia or Merengue.”

“If you can dance Cumbia and Merengue, a waltz will be a cinch. Care to try your feet at one?”

She glanced at the dance floor uncertainly. “Is that what this is?”

“Yes. It’s Ashokan Farewell. One of my favorites.”

She turned back to him. “Well, if you’re willing to risk it, I am too.”

He was willing to risk a lot more than that, and her words gave him the impression she was too. He trusted his skills of observation, and the body language behind her comment told him she was talking about more than a dance. He set down his glass and took her hand, finding it even softer than he’d expected, and led her to the dance floor—ignoring the shocked stares of everyone present.

“This is just a basic waltz, Megan. Your left hand goes here.” He lifted her hand and placed it on his right shoulder. “I want you close to me, so you can feel my movements, but not too close.” He wrapped his left hand around her right, slowly closing his fingers one by one, and lifted her arm straight to the side. He glanced down.

Had her breathing stopped?

There was no movement in her chest. He felt his pulse quicken and draped his right arm over her shoulder, resting his hand against the bare skin of her shoulder blade. “Your right foot goes between my feet. Now turn your head left.”

She stared at him and didn’t respond.

She still wasn’t breathing.

Hayden smiled. “Turn your head left,” he repeated, his voice low.

She slowly looked away, turning her face away from his. Her chest rose and fell with a slight catch, and her breathing resumed.

“Now I’ll step forward with my right leg and bring it between your legs. When I do, you step back on your left.” He moved toward her and she moved away. “Now you step right.” She did as he instructed. “Now forward, opposite leg. Now left.” She followed him effortlessly, gliding smoothly. “Now we just continue this same basic pattern. It’s a very strict rhythm. Don’t push it. Not too fast. Not too slow. Just follow the rhythm. Follow me.” He controlled the movements of her body easily, leading her gracefully across the floor. Forward, left, back, right. Each moving to the haunting strains of the violins and guitar. “You’ve done this before, haven’t you?”

She smiled and looked back at him. “No, this is my first time. I’m just following your lead.”

“Keep your head left,” he said. “Well, you’re a natural. By the way, you smell good.”

“Thanks Hayden, so do you.”

A sudden flash startled him, when he turned toward it, he came face-to-face with Emma. She shoved her camera at him and snapped another picture. Then she lunged at Megan and tackled her to the dance floor with a Banshee-like wail.

Hi Lou! I wondered if you’d gotten that yet. I wondered how long delivery would take down under. Sure hope you enjoy it when you get it. As for my next book… it will probably be a one-word title starting with an ‘S.’ I’m thinking of “Slither.” I’ll have to work snakes into it somehow. lol. I do have a blog, but I probably won’t post to it again until my three-day marathon is over here. Here’s that link: http://www.dlynnkennedy.blogspot.com. Thanks for stopping in to say hi!

Designing the Perfect Romance Cast Register by April 29th and save $5, use code ROMANCECASTKNIGHT2024 at checkout! In this brand-new month-long online class, New York Times bestselling author Angela Knight discusses the importance of creating the perfect cast for the kind of romance you’re trying to write.

A memorable romance cast is more than the sum of its parts. To create an effective book, all the characters – protagonists, antagonists, and minor characters – must work together as a unit. And each must fit the kind of book you’re trying to write. Leatherface of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre does not belong in a Rom Com. Nor do you want minor characters to steal the book.

But how do you create a good cast for this particular book and the audience you’re aiming for?

Angela discusses how to design your heroic couple for each other, along with the minor characters and sidekicks who help make the protagonists three-dimensional.

She’ll also talk antagonists and their henchmen, and how to use them to create tension and excitement.

Next, she’ll explore dialogue, humor and arguments as a way to develop character and conflict.

The result will be a firm foundation for your book so you won’t be flailing in the dark, trying to figure out why the heck your book isn’t working.

Lessons in this month-long online class will be posted on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, students may email scenes to Angela for her private critique and suggestions.

Check out #marteekakarland #hot #MC series #GrimRoad series. Save at #changelingPress #Rocket #Lemon #Bullet These belong on your #keeper shelf

Rocket: My life pretty much took a hard left a year ago when I first met Lemon. She’s wise beyond her years and as abrasive and sarcastic as they come. The second she busts my VP’s balls -- literally -- I know I’d never be able to forget her. A year later I’m still infatuated with the vicious woman. When she runs off to charge hell with a water pistol, I’m right behind her wondering how we’re gonna get out of this one alive. But I have a smile on my face and a determination to give this woman anything she wants. Even if it means some things in my club are going to have to change.

Lemon: Look. This is supposed to be all about how Rocket caught my eye and I decided I wanted him but there were obstacles and… phfffffff… Forget all that. What you need to know is when people are stupid, they need a kick in the… Crap. I’m not supposed to swear here. Grrrrr! Anyway, this is where I come in. Grim Road needs fixing. I’m not exactly qualified to do club… garbage, but Rocket? Yeah. I might have decided I’ll keep him, so… I’m great at whipping people into shape. Grim Road, meet Lemon. See me, love me, MF’ers.

Rocket: Just pass me the beer and popcorn…

Lemon: I’m settling in at Grim Road in my role as vice president. The men test me, but it’s all in good fun. I think I enjoy it as much as they do. Then, out of nowhere, things go horribly sideways. I realize how much weaker I am physically than everyone else in the club. That weakness can be a horrible liability. Yeah. Things are going great. Until they aren’t. I may have bitten off more than I can chew…

Rocket: My little sourpuss is a force to be reckoned with. She takes everything dished out to her and gives it back in spades. She’s my VP, but she’s also my old lady. Sometimes, I need to take care of her. More importantly, she has to let me. That fact is never more apparent than when a small team of roughnecks think she’s a woman from another club.

Kissed by the Alien is the second book of the Holiday Heartmates series by Julie K. Cohen.

Lexi is amazing! She’s strong, brave, resourceful, fearless, stubborn and feisty. And she has such a kind and compassionate heart. Even more, I loved her courage, determination and confidence to do the things she does and to face any challenges and hardships thrown her way. Lexi is a wonderful woman and I loved her so, so much!

And Lutan is such an incredible male! He’s brooding, quiet, fearsome and not very fond of Earth. And he’s also honorable, kind and fiercely protective. But the Zyanthan warrior also carries so much guilt and pain inside his heart. Nevertheless, Lutan is amazing and I adored everything about him!

I absolutely loved everything that happened between Lexi and Lutan! While on a mission to track down illegal blasters that keep finding their way on Earth, Lutan captures a male who turns out to be no man at all. I loved those two together! I loved their instantaneous attraction and their chemistry was fantastic. Even more, their banters, bargaining and teasing were so much fun to read. Lexi and Lutan might seem to be on opposite sides of the law, but they fit so well together. I loved how protective Lutan was of Lexi and I adored Lexi for standing her ground and never backing down from challenges and danger. And, yet, both had so many things they needed to deal with. Lutan also really did his best to stay away from Lexi, but fate cannot be denied. And when they couldn’t resist the undeniable need for one another anymore, the passionate moments they shared were so hot! I just love the Zyanthan warriors and all their… extras! Lexi and Lutan were so perfect for each other and, after everything both went through, they deserved to find happiness and love together!

Overall, Kissed by the Alien is another fantastic addition to the series! It’s filled with suspense, danger, action, drama, angst, twists, betrayals, humor, scorching hot passion and magnificent characters.
