Blurb:Evangeline is magical. She longs to find her soulmate – and being a
woman of power – she whips up a spell and conjures him up. Austin
Firefighter Eric McCallister is enchanted by the beautiful woman
who sculpted his likeness from a dream. Immediately, their attraction
and chemistry burns like a wildfire. But, all is not a fairy-tale. An
arsonist is stalking Eric and someone is trying to kill Evangeline. On top of
that, there’s magick afoot that can call down storms, bring the dead back
to life and break ancient curses. But, the greatest magick of all is the love
Eric has for Sweet Evangeline.
CTR: What made you decide to write this particular book? Did you have a special uniformed person in mind or just admire them all? Can you give us some story behind the story?
SH: This book hovered in my mind for quite a while. It is a sequel to Josie Arlington’s A Wishing Moon about a family of powerful women who practice New Orleans style witchcraft – hoodoo. I have New Orleans roots, and frankly, I know some folks who believe that sort of thing and visiting and talking to them is absolutely fantastic.
I didn’t have a particular person in mind, although my husband has always been a volunteer firemen and I respect men who lay their lives on the line to keep us safe. It also might have something to do with all that heat and sweaty muscles – but, I digress.
I wanted to tell a story that mattered – this book has an underlying theme of prejudice and how we condemn people for their beliefs without really taking time to understand them or why they choose to live the way they do. I’ve experienced prejudice, and it’s something that’s hard to hide from. My wish is that people would live and love and allow others to do the same.
The hunky fireman in Sweet Evangeline is longing for a love of his own – and he gets it. Evangeline has been given the assignment of sculpting the perfect man, so she takes it a step further and decides to sculpt HER perfect man. Using her magical acumen, she pulls back the curtain of reality and sees his face. So, she sculps him – life size – nude – out of clay and then casts a spell out into the universe to call him to her. Flash forward to an Austin benefit to honor community heroes. Picture gorgeous Alex McCalister striding in to find everybody in the room surrounding an exact replica of him in all his aroused glory. Things only get hotter from there.
CTR: How about the spouses and SOs of our uniformed protectors—do you know one and sympathize with the special stresses they have to endure? Do you think couples can make two careers of this kind work?
SH: Being a spouse/so of a firefighter would be difficult. I’m sure they send many prayers skyward to keep their loved ones from harm. We see a little of that in my book. Eric is in danger and Evangeline is determined to keep him safe. She uses her powers to heal, and even calls down rain to help battle an out of control blaze. Not all wives have magical abilities, but they all share the same desire to build a barrier of love and protection around their brave men.
CTR: What do you think is the special appeal of men and women in uniform, be it military, law enforcement, fire fighters or others? Do they make good romance characters because of this?
SH: I think the special appeal is the life decision they have made to live a life of service. It takes a special man to constantly face danger and put the needs of others before his own. Because of that macho, alpha, man’s-man persona they make the very best romantic heroes. Swoon Material!
CTR: Let’s switch subjects a little bit now. Here we are at the start of a brand new year. Are you one of those folks who makes a big list of resolutions and struggles to keep at least some of them or do you take a pass on this custom?
SH: Well, I am a chronic list keeper. I am goal oriented and work best under pressure. So, Lord yes, I make goals for the New Year. I already know how many books I’m going to try and finish and how many pounds I need to lose and which closets I need to clean out.
CTR: Do you have a goal, plan or dream for something to do this year?
SH: Yes, I want to finish my Hell Yeah! series. It is about six brothers who live on Tebow Ranch in the Hill Country of Texas. Cowboy Heat has been very popular and I spend a lot of my time with these drool-worthy western types. There is also a sequel to Sweet Evangeline in the mill – Zak’s Blue Moon – have to keep the magical cauldron bubbling. Actually, I have four active series and hope to add to each one in 2011.
CTR: Where do you see yourself and your writing career on Jan 1, 2012? 2020? Even farther into the future?
SH: Still writing and enjoying the journey. By January 2012 I hope to have at least a dozen more books out – I have seven now and more projects started than Carter has little liver pills. By 2020, Good Gracious, I hope to be well, happy and a household word in the erotic romance community. One can dream!
CTR: Anything else you’d like to share with our readers today?
SH: Yes, I hope that each one of you has a very Happy New Year. I am honored to write romances that people actually like to read. My desire is to create worlds that offer people a chance to escape their problems and bask in the magic of desire, the spark of new love and the satisfaction of a relationship that is full of romance and the promise of a future. Here’s to HAPPY ENDINGS!
