Like Shadow, I started out with historicals, westerns first and then the old classics like Frank Yerby and Thomas Costain–this was before romance was even a genre. (I admit to being older than dirt!)
Anyway, some of them were sneaking into the romance genre by featuring more love scenes but not explicit in those days although not always closing the bedroom door. We did have heaving bosoms and throbbing manhoods!! (ROFL)
Then I got into fantasy and science fiction and was always disappointed that there was not more romance in them. I did love Marion Zimmer Bradley’s Darkover series, Anne McCaffery’s Dragon series and C.J. Cherryh’s Chanur books but dang, no real important love stories!! So after I had read quite a bit of contemporary and historical romances–real ones now that the genre had emerged–I was tickled all shades of pink when urban fantasy and such began to appear! Whoo hoo. I don’t really have a fave, I guess although I like Eileen Wilks’ Lupi series (shifters and yummy characters!) and Ilona Andrews’ two series which are awesome. Oh, and Allie McKay’s time travel Scots romances with ghosties and other neat stuff. Ooooh!! (Allie is a pseudonym of Sue Ellen Welfonder, a dear friend and fabulous historical writer!)
I am not a huge vampire fan although there are some good ones out there and zombies kinda leave me cold. But otherworldly and paranormal entities in our current world is awesome. Classic medieval fantasy can be fun too. I’m a very eclectic reader and pick more by writers and just something that tweaks my interest rather than a specific genre. I’m not quite a cover slut but have been known to get a book just ‘cuz I loved the cover, too!
In my author hats, I have written a few paranormal tales and have an idea for a series that *may” take off one of these days. It features a kick-ass heroine who is anglo but raised in the Navajo culture and the setting is a bit like Ilona Andrew’s “Edge” in that there is a checkerboard region in the southwest where magic rules in some areas and tech in others. My gal can go freely between them but most folks can’t. This would be a bit futuristic as maybe happening in about 2200 or so. Gotta let that perk awhile. So don’t hold your breath but I will try!! Well, Deirdre will try 😉
