We all know that chocolate is associated with romance and Valentine's Day. I am sure not too many of us would not get all gooey feeling if our Sweetie surprised us with a big red heart shaped box around That Day. And I do enjoy a bit of it, admittedly. But despite Forrest Gump's wisdom, in many ways you do know what you will get when you pick one–it will be sweet and tasty but calorie laden and maybe not exactly what you wanted after all. Sometimes it takes salty or spicy or exotic!!.
There are times when we all turn to our fave comfort food and for many it is far removed from chocolate. One of my writer friends has a deep craving for potatoes–almost any kind and any time. While I love them too, my favorite 'curl up with a bowl full and feel better' meal is macaroni and cheese! Hardly glamorous but just a –well–comfortable thing to eat. I may take mine from a box to start but then I add my own touches–some kind of meat, usually either browned crumbled sausage or a package of those little smoky links. Then more cheese–too much cheese is not possible!! Sharp cheddar is my fave–and sometimes a sprinkle of french fried onions over the top. Or stir in a can of chopped green chili. (As a New Mexican now I know the red vs green question and my choice is green!)
I can be cold and miserable–I totally hate being cold and as a result do not enjoy winter or the snow and ice sports many people seem to have so much fun taking part in–but after I get outside of a good batch of macaroni, I just plain feel better! So share–writers and readers both–what is your fave comfort food and why?
I used to prefer my mom's spaghetti but somewhere along the line changed my preference. I ate a lot of macaroni as a struggling college student, left it alone for awhile and a few years ago got back into enjoying it. Maybe a trace of nostalgia there! Comment and I will pick one winner for a Mexican food cookbook that I wound up wtih two copies of!
