It’s Labor Day, and I am not on the beach.
I saw the ocean for the first time when I was twenty years old. The impact it had on me drove me to read about it, learn and eventually try scuba diving. At forty, I made my second salt water dive and had a wonderful experience. On that day, I was more concerned about the lionfish species invading the Caribbean than another birthday. I watched the dive master who accompanied us catch several off the reefs. Who would have thought a natural predator such as this could threaten the sea life that we love? It’s moved me to write stories centered around our beautiful oceans.
If you know what I like to write, then you know for me the sea means pirates and buried treasure. My sweet award winning contemporary romance, BY HEART AND COMPASS is a shipwreck romance adventure about trusting your heart when it matters most. Here’s a little info:
When Lacey Whitman buys a restored Victorian home, she never dreams discovering an antique diary will lead her back to sea and into the arms of the dive bum she’d rather forget. Her habit of living in the past comes to a screeching halt as diver Max Bertrand and the diary of his ancestor take Lacey on the quest of a lifetime: To discover and raise the privateer ship, Specter, and bring the treasure and legacy of a true hero home again. But will finding it cost her heart?
Although it isn’t as environmentally-themed as my novel, TURTLE SOUP, this novel meant just as much to me because it was an opportunity to tell sea stories and most importantly, write about the things I care about. Have you ever thought about diving, or is the sand between your toes enough for you?
