Wow, some really good sounding books showing up here today! I do love military heroes. Something about putting on that uniform and all that it represents really makes a guy –or a gal–a powerful, sexy and intriguing figure! If you know the training they go through–even just the 'ordinary' soldier, sailor, airman, coast guard or marine–you have to respect their toughness and determination. Those drill instructors know how to make a next-door kid into a hero! Then when it is Seals, Special Forces etc. they are right in there with Superman! Three cheers for them all!
I am so thankful that things are different now than when some of my contemporaries came home from Vietnam and were treated really bad. You do not have to love war or support it or believe in the reasons why a war is fought to support the troops and the veterans. While a few choose not to serve even in times of the draft. most went and did their best and now all of our military are volunteers. That takes a lot of gumption right there to go up and sign on the dotted line because you are not signing over just a few years of your life but a whole lot more including maybe your actual life itself. I tend to put law enforcement people, fire fighters etc into a similar category because they face some really hard issues as well, danger in every shift.
Right now the many firefighters who are out battling the blazes throughout the west are really my heroes. They are going into some very rough and rugged terrain, enduring extreme heat and the danger when wind and drought makes a raging wildfire into a dangerous and totally unpredictable enemy. While my old neighborhood there was not even threatened or evacuated, I really hurt for the folks in Colorado Springs who have gone through hell the past few days. Then a few weeks back it was friends who live in the NM mountains up around Ruidoso. and Capitan. A lot of homes and summer cabins there were also lost. Please take a moment with me to pray for the summer rains to end the severe drought and ease the danger and for the firefighters and the people who have been hurt by these blazes! You can give to the Red Cross and specify a fire area as a small way to help. I am sure there are other gateways to do so as well. It's the patriotic and right thing to do if you have been spared by the severe storms in some places and fires in others! It is a tough year!
A bit later collecting books, clothes and toiletries as well as other needed supplies for people who have lost so much might be something a community or group could do also. Please share if you have any ideas or know of ongoing efforts more of us could take part in. I know we all want to help however we can! We can be mini-heroes too!
