What is more poignant in a romance than lost love? Our hero has met the love of his life, but due to circumstances beyond his control, he’s torn from her. Perhaps he’s gone off to war, taken prisoner and assumed dead. Maybe he works undercover, and to give into his desires would put his true love at risk, so he must leave her behind for her own safety.
Our heroine has just met her soul mate, but she lives in a world where she must marry a man not of her choosing. And her soul mate is not the man chosen. Perhaps he’s a poor student, but she must marry well for the sake of her family.
An author has so very many resources at her fingertips (neuron endings) when it comes to tearing lovers apart. It’s even more fun, and far more satisfying, to reunite them. The most poignant scenes may be those that occur when the lovers find their way back to each other.
I’m drawn to this theme, probably because lost love is the story of my life, but I’ve written three books that hinge upon the theme of lost love – Anytime Darlin’, my first romance, is the story of a young woman from Iowa and the Montana cattle rancher who falls in love with her. Devlin Barre and Jake McKenna. Jake falls for Devlin at the wrong time in her life, and he realizes that if he truly loves her, he will let her go. The two protagonists have no contact for five long years, yet neither can get the other out of their heart. When they are reunited, all those pent-up sparks burst into a glorious and very dangerous flame.
My other novels about lovers reunited are My Everything and Come Back To Me. Like Anytime Darlin’, both are works of romantic suspense. My Everything is the story of an undercover agent who believes he has lost everything and everyone he loves. Come Back to Me follows the winding path of a tortured heroine and the man who loves her, a man who never gives up hope of reuniting.
What do you think? Is lost love a theme you enjoy? How sweet it is when lovers reunite!
