I’m so glad to be here at Coffee Time Romance and More! The name and yummy graphics always warm me up, and make me crave the treats that go so well with a strong, fragrant cup of coffee. Vanilla bean cupcakes, raspberry-filled powdered donuts, crisp almond biscotti and dark, rich chocolate. Though, to chocolate’s credit, it goes with just about anything and does quite well by itself.
Thinking about all of these delectable snacks reminds me of a sad fact in Romantic Fiction, though. We hardly ever get to see story people eat. Or see them tend to bodily functions, but I have no problem with that, lol. Please do give me a book with a closed door on that, like a TV show from the 1950s. But please let me see these characters eat!
Oh, I know it’s fiction. I know we’re supposed to focus on the growing relationship between the hero and heroine, the dynamics of their relationships to others in their story world, the conflicts conspiring to keep them apart, etc. But, darn it, I want to see them eat something! There are exceptions, of course. I’ve read some wonderful books where you can almost taste the food described. There are books, Historical and Contemporary, that even include recipes on some of the characters’ favorite treats. I love those and wish I had that particular talent!
Now, in my latest Lachesis Publishing Inc release, More Than Passion, my characters eat. From the earthy hearty fare at the Raven’s Inn, to the luscious strawberries Geoffrey and Becca picnic on in the green, to the sumptuous meals served in the dining room at the Kanewood estate, I wanted to add details that round out the scene and lend my characters a touch of realism. I don’t know if I succeeded on that last count, but I sure like reading those scenes. There are no calories in reading about food, are there?
I’ve tried to write in the details to bring my books to life, and I hope readers will enjoy the food I “serve” in my upcoming Lachesis Publishing Inc release, More Than Charming. Along with the passion and betrayal and hero’s discovery of a love that was right under his nose the whole time, of course.
I’ve been reading a lot of Young Adult fiction lately, and realize that many of that genre’s regular readership aren’t very interested in food. That, and the protagonists are usually running from some sort of danger so sitting down to a chicken pot pie or even grabbing a powdered donut at the 7-11 isn’t a big priority. But when I read an Historical Romance, I want all of the details on the page. Yes, I relish the steamy love scenes and clothing descriptions. I get lost in the language and sweeping vistas. But I want a touch more.
Or maybe I’m just hungry.
Thanks so much for dropping by. I’d love to hear from readers, too. Please email me at JoMarie@JoMarieDeGioia.com or visit my website, www.jomariedegioia.com
