Impersonating a half-sister she has never met to snag a duke is such a crazy scheme, Charlene Beckett is sure it will never work. If she can pull it off; however, she will have enough coin to get her little sister Lulu an apprenticeship, pay off the Pink Feather’s debt, and get the medical care her mother desperately needs.
England feels like a shackle for the newly titled Duke of Harland. With his father and brother’s deaths, James is now the reluctant recipient of the dukedom, which means a bride and heir are requirements he can no longer avoid.
Charlene refuses to become a courtesan like her mother, but transforming into an innocent debutante like Lady Dorothea is not going to be easy. Right from the start Charlene’s mouth gets her in trouble, although it seems the duke is quite intrigued by her eccentricities. James bucks society’s rules regularly, but if he wants to grow his business, and have his daughter Flor accepted by his peers, he needs a poised and proper lady as his wife. In James’s eyes, Lady Dorothea is everything he wants in a woman, and absolutely wrong for what he needs in a wife. Too bad his heart does not see that distinction.
Charlene is a champion for her little sister, as well as all of the women barely surviving on the streets of London. Her will and determination are extraordinary, which is why I feel she is such a great match for James. The gruff and unpolished duke melts like chocolate in Charlene’s hands, and just like the confection, one taste is not enough. Ms. Bell infuses her stories with humor, caring, passion, and intelligence, and I promise you will love every morsel.
