And finally, we come to time travels. While a part of the paranormal genre, time travel romances seem to get their own special little sub-genre that is well known and recognized. People either love time travels or don’t. I’m a lover. Ever since “Somewhere in Time.” Sigh… The costumes, the music, the exquisite Jane Seymour…what’s not to like?
With that focus in mind, and the validation of wonderful reader comments on my time travel to the late Victorian era of Seattle, A TRAIN THROUGH TIME, I THINK I’ve found my favorite writing genre…time travels.
So, now, I’m writing two at once. Surprisingly, I began another ghost story, a light paranormal inspired by a wonderfully breezy cemetery we explored on a recent cemetery hopping/ancestral hunting/genealogical trip we undertook through the Midwest we traveled south to the Gulf Coast for the winter. But I already have two…mebbe three…ghost stories either coming soon or in edits…and I’m turning that one into a time travel, though the traveler will come to present day. A fun juxtaposition of a nineteenth century man in present day who thinks he’s actually a ghost…so far. I have no idea how it will end, but I know they will live happily ever after. That’s always tricky with time travel and ghost stories. 🙂
So, tell me, readers! What is your favorite genre to read? Writers..Have you picked a “favorite” writing genre yet? One you can learn to focus your energies on, improving your skills through research and practice.
That’s it for me today, my Coffeetime chums. I’ll stop by often to read comments. Remember, a free download of my time travel, A TRAIN THROUGH TIME, to anyone who comments before midnight tomorrow night!

16 years agoYou took the words right out of my heart. I love time travel, I love to read it and I love to write it. It is my favorite romance genre.
Maybe it was the terrific acting of Christopher Reeves, so emotional. I remember his stomach quivering with his truly gut wrenching feelings of love. I was hooked.
Reading every time travel I have ever come across in paperback, and I am heading now to ebooks, that’s as soon as I can afford to buy them. (grin) Do you read them yourself?
I don’t know what it is other than the thrill of the paranormal touch to a take you to a new exciting place. Because where the hero and heroine go, I go too.
Be well Bess and the best of luck in your sales. Although the reviews say it all!

16 years agoTime travel will always be my favorite genre to write and to read. But a while back time travels became a slow sell and editors wouldn’t even look at them. So I started writing romantic parnormal suspense. I managed to get published with that genre. But recently I signed a contract with The Wild Rose Press for my time travel, Misty Dreams. It’s set in present day and 1876 Deadwood. Will I write more time travels? I am, and I’ve got several more loosely plotted out. Will I continue to write my dark paranormals? Yup. 🙄
Great blog. I enjoyed reading it.

16 years ago AUTHORAh, Mary, my friend…
Always here when I need you! You’ve got a time travel romance out, don’t you?
I’ll confess to not reading time travels since A Knight in Shining Armor. And since I’m writing time travels now, I don’t want to pick up any nuances or words from my fellow time travel writers, however inadvertently I might do that. 🙂
Thank you for stopping by, Mary!

Oh, dear. I can’t imagine time travels being a slow sell. So many people seem to love them. Romantic paranormal suspense. Now, that’s a fascinating mix of genres! 🙂
Thanks for the compliment on the blog! I had fun!

16 years agoOh Bess! What a very timely question! I have had a lot of trouble with this situation. I LOVE romance, and fantasy. But I really get into the suspense/mystery thing just because I am a lover of puzzles. Trying to figure out the whodunnit part intrigues me. Anyway, I am settling for mystery for now. I will probably never quit writing other things as they come to me (who wants to halt the muse?) but, for now, mystery wins.

16 years ago AUTHORHey Kim,
And it’s a good thing you remain open to writing in other genres…just in case fantasy slows down, though I simply cannot imagine that scenario.
Thanks so much for stopping by!

16 years agoHi, it’s me, and it’s before midnight. The only time-travel stories I ever knew about were A YANKEE IN KING ARTHUR’S COURT and BACK TO THE FUTURE. How about that for going way back. I wonder how you make a Nineteenth Century man go to the future, thinking he’s a ghost, but he falls in love? Even displaced persons need love. Right? I want your book, but if you have too many answers, you can leave me out and I’ll buy one. Okay? Celia (I’m being more generous than I actually am.) 🙄

16 years ago😉 I’m so glad you put the link in on the loop. Funny how I can have almost 900 posts on CTR and not have been to this blog even once. grin
Lets see. My favorite genre? Spicy – Paranormal. Yep. That’s it. *hiding behind laptop* I really enjoy all things vamp and werewolf. Give me a witch or a vampire slayer and I’m good. Time travel? Yes! Count me in. Add a little erotic spice and you’ve picked the perfect book for me.
I really don’t want to read about the horrors of life. After 15 years of working in an ER, I’ve seen it all. So give me fantasy please.
Now I do enjoy each and every genre of romance out there. Give me a dashing Duke or a crazy cop. I love all HEA. (happily ever afters). Oh… and cowboys. They can be so yummy, don’t you think?

16 years agoCelia, my friend. How could I forget A Yankee in King Arthur’s Court. I loved that story. My nineteenth century man “appears” in a cemetery…ergo, they all think he’s a ghost! He falls in love with the same woman he was engaged to in the nineteenth century. It’s a mystery to quote the movie Shakespeare in Love!

16 years agoI’m not a big fan of time travel because I believe in chaos theory. Too many factors messing up the future. Once I get past that, my biggest problem would be the anachronisms. Whether it is in attitude or speech of the characters. Not every female was raised to believe that they were equal. There was a definite class structure and few people spoke their minds to their ‘betters’.
I remember “Somewhere in Time”. For the longest time, I couldn’t remember the name of the movie. I referred to it as ‘the penny movie’.
I’m happy that there is someone writing new ghost stories. Any chance you might try your hand at a Gothic??? 🙂

16 years agoHi Catherine. Thanks for stopping by! Great blog here at Coffeetime Romance, isn’t it?
Oh, dear me…the ER. You certainly are entitled to as much fantasy as you like. 🙂

16 years agoHi, That Brunette.
I see your point about the chaos theory.
I hadn’t thought of doing a Gothic. What a great idea. As in Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre? I think I used to read Gothic.

16 years agoWhen asked what movies influenced me the most growing up, Somewhere in Time is my answer. (Star Wars being my other favorite) I saw them when I was a teen and they both left a lasting impression on me. And one of my favorite novels is Wurthering Heights. As one of my professors told me years ago, I was an arch-romantic. So yes, I love time travel—but more to the past than the future. My favorite genre, though, is romance with mystery. If it involves time travel, then all the better. As far as writing a mystery goes, though, . . . .well, I’m working on that. I’m so afraid of getting factual details wrong that I block myself. Julie

16 years agoThats a cool way to have picked a genre- My passions always have laid in a certain area so the choice was easy for me! hehe

16 years agoHi Julie,
Thanks for dropping by. I understand what you’re saying about the factual details “blocking” you. I’m at that place with one of my time travels. For me, the best thing would be/will be to barrel on through my first draft and trust that I’ll be able to get the specific details and plotting problems down on the first or second rewrite. And I think I’ll probably find that I did better than I thought I would. That’s how A Train Through Time worked out for me.

16 years agoHi Bess!
Great topic and a great group of readers! I love that there is the time travel group of readers and I’m doing my best to help increase that genre. My time travel novel (and my first book) was released Dec 14 by Mystic Moon Press as an ebook – Never Surrender. I loved writing it but love hearing from readers even more.
How many remember ‘The Ghost and Mrs. Muir’? I absolutely loved watching that show! One of my manuscripts has a lighthouse and a ghost from the past. I need to write faster so I can finish that!
Thanks for bringing up the time travel topic. We love the readers of this genre. Thank you!
