I want to start by wishing everyone a very happy Canada Day and Independence Day! July is a special month for us in the USA and our neighbors to the north as well as we celebrate the beginning of our countries and in part the common heritage we share as having once been British colonies. We "Yanks" got hot-headed, rebelled as teenagers LOL and broke away whereas the Canadians were more patient but that is okay too! We remain cousins and friends which is neat.
Anyway today we celebrate with some books that tie in to the history of both countries, our military and patriotism on both sides of the border here. I confess to being an avid flag-waver, not just on the special holidays but all the time. Yes, I am "proud to be an American" just as the song says. (Hey, we are *all* Americans in the western hemisphere if one gets technical about it so that is pretty inclusive.) I know that Mexico celebrates two different days for their nation and independence, May 5, "Cinco de Mayo" and September 16. Nations farther south have other days, of course, and I am less familiar with them but will party for just about any excuse. .
I've been a member of the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Auxiliary for over twenty years and am a strong booster of our vets and those active duty folks out there in bad places today in our behalf. We cannot do too much for them or give enough gratitude IMHO. I worked for the Army and Air Force as a civilian for a number of years plus my late hubby and one son were both Marines so I love books with military characters.,
Actually July 4 is one of my very favorite holidays and a big part of that is 'cause I love fireworks! I am a big kid about them and have loved them since I was a kid. Many places in the west have cancelled them this year due to the extreme fire danger and most locales have outlawed personal fireworks–where they are normally legal–for the same reason. I grew up in a state that did not allow them at all but were not real strict on enforcing the ban. Most cities and towns in Arizona did provide good displays so I surely did not miss not having my own. I am kinda scared of anything explosive anyway! Here in Alamogordo, NM we are to have a city display to be shot off at the AIr and Space Museum which sits up on a pretty barren ridge above town so I think that will be safe enough. And that is about a half mile airline from my house so I have a great view from my carport. Wheeee! I am praying for the rainy season to come and douse fires but hope it will be dry for an hour or two Wednesday night!
But for today let the fireworks begin on printed pages and our screens as we find some new tales for our TBR list and additions to fill our Nook, Kindle or other reader! The usual rules apply–guests are strongly urged to comment and every time you do it puts your name in the hat again for our drawings and betters your chances to win free reads and such. Do not be shy! I will be here most of the time but have a personal business issue or two that I need to take care of so will be in and out but I'll get comments approved as fast as I can and deal with any problems. Email me off line (azwriter427 at yahoo) if you have one.
Grab a cold one and kick back now for some fun.
