Alistair Costanova is a vampire with a distraught past. He found his soul mate over a hundred years ago, only to lose him and his younger brother to an angry mob. In his grief and fury he committed atrocities, and it was only the friendship of his King that saved him from descending into utter madness.
Sam Hayes is a wizard and the best friend of Prince Kevyan’s mate Dorian. He has known about Dorian being a shifter since before Dorian knew, and he kept his secret, protecting his best friend who he loves dearly. Moving to Melrose Town is supposed to be a brand new start for Sam, but it does not take long for him to figure out the town is populated by vampires and other supernaturals. His first meeting with Alistair, a man he finds himself very attracted to, sends the other man running for the hills, though Sam has no idea why at the time.
When Alistair meets Sam for the first time, he is stunned to come face to face with his dead mate, and it is not long before he begins to suspect that Sam is the reincarnation of his dead lover. Still, Sam is very different in temperament from his former mate, and even if he is the reincarnation of his dead mate, how can he face the man after what he did? For Sam’s part he is more attracted to Alistair than he has been attracted to any man in his life, but Alistair keeps blowing hot and cold, and Sam is getting sick of it. He does not know what he will do if Alistair turns him away for good. Can he convince Alistair to take a chance on a relationship, or will Alistair continue to run away?
I loved this third book in the Melrose Coven series, it was awesome! The whole reincarnation aspect really added a lot to the story, and while I did not particularly care for the fact that Alistair had committed atrocities in the past, I understood the reason for adding that particular tidbit to the story. In fact, in the end it is one of the facts, as horrific as it is that makes this story truly memorable because there is idea that no matter what someone has done, there is always a chance for redemption. The world building continues in this story, and the added details of this world really added to the story. I loved getting to read more about Dorian, Kevyan and the other characters from book 2 as well. The love scenes are delicious, and the emotion imbued in them makes this story a keeper. I will definitely be reading this book again, and I highly recommend it for anyone who loves vampire and m/m romance.
