First and Last Lines
Writers spend a lot of time framing their opening and closing lines. Sometimes it’s fun to pick up a book and read the first and last line. I’ve made sure that none of them spoil any surprises!
Here are the first and last lines from my novels and novellas in the order with which they were written…
She’ll Take It
First line: ‘Before I steal, I pray.’
Last Line: ‘Now that’s my kind of saint.’
Accidentally Engaged
First line: “It all started that fateful evening when I allowed myself to turn over that first card.”
Last line: ‘I didn’t know—exactly—what was going to happen from here, but I knew it was going to be good. I just knew.’
Sunnyside Blues
First line: ‘There was nothing remarkable about the police interrogation room.’
Last line: “I love you too, Hector,” she replied.
Almost Home “The Honeymoon House”
First line: ‘She had no choice—it was a direct order from the Bride Monster.
Last line: ‘And in that moment, nobody knew better than Kate Williams how a few moments of “forever” could last a girl a lifetime.’
Holiday Magic “A Very Maui Christmas”
First Line: ‘Good things come in small packages, but so does anthrax.’
Last line: And this time, when she leaned in for a kiss, there was no stopping her.
My Sister’s Voice
First line: ‘It was here, in the City of Brotherly Love, at twenty-eight-years of age that Lacey Gears first discovered she had a sister.’
Last line: “And I hope they look like you,” she said.
The Pub Across the Pond
First line: ‘It was the greatest love story every told in Ballybeog when everyone was drunk but nobody wanted to go home and every other great love story had been told.’
