EXCERPT:
Her thoughts were interrupted when she heard someone behind her on the sidewalk. Turning her head, she saw Dr. Cunningham running. She’d met him briefly during her doctor’s appointment. He was a good-looking man with black hair, and his dark brown eyes reminded her of the color of the chocolate pie she’d eaten for lunch. When the young doctor was next to her, he switched to walking.
Dr. Cunningham gave her a broad smile. “Hi. It’s nice to see you’re getting exercise too. It’s a great evening to be outside.”
She noticed he had adorable dimples when he smiled. “I used to run a lot before”””she stopped speaking to point to her belly”””this happened.” Embarrassed that she’d mentioned her pregnancy, she quickly asked, “Do you live around here?”
“I’m staying with Dr. Foster and his wife for now. He’s trying to convince me to stay in Fields Corner, so that I can become a partner with him.”
“I suppose if you like small towns, it should be a good fit for you. Are you from a small town, Dr. Cunningham?”
“No, I’m from Cleveland. And you can call me Tony.”
“I guess you must be a Cleveland Browns fan, then.”
“You got that right. Are you a Bengals fan?”
Her foot hit a rough spot in the sidewalk, and she swayed against Tony. Immediately, he put his arm around her. “Hey, it’s okay if you root for your hometown football team.”
“Sorry, the sidewalk’s uneven and caused me to lose my balance.” She didn’t want him to think she had purposely tried to make a romantic pass at him. With his good looks, she supposed females throwing themselves at him had happened before.
He removed his arm. “Are you getting tired? I thought maybe we could stop and get an ice cream cone. UDF isn’t very far from here.”
“I don’t know. I already had pie today, but I do love ice cream.”
“You didn’t eat a whole pie, did you?”
She laughed. “Of course not.”
“That’s good. And I don’t think even if you had, it would hurt you to have a cone too. You don’t look like you’re in your last trimester.”
“Thanks. I’m glad I don’t look as big as I feel. Hey, which college football team do you like?”
“I love Ohio State football. In fact, I’m a big Buckeyes fan and usually go to a couple of their home games each season.”
“Right answer. I love them too. I’ll get a cone with you since we are both Ohio State fans.”
“That’s good we have something in common.”
His grin was infectious, and she grinned back at him.
Was Dr. Cunningham flirting with her? Or Tony, rather? Glancing at him again, she caught Tony staring at her in a way that could have been mistaken for romantic interest. What’s wrong with me? Of course he isn’t interested in me romantically. I’m a pregnant teenager. He’s probably lonely like I am . . . being away from home is hard.
One thing she knew was it felt nice to have a good-looking guy wanting to spend time with her. Logan sure hadn’t stuck around to be with her this summer. She also was glad that Tony hadn’t done a pelvic exam on her today. It would be too embarrassing to eat a cone with him if he had.
Now that I’m thinking about my condition, I definitely don’t want Tony to be the doctor to deliver my baby.
