Stella Denton is a homely, overweight college student who just lost her mother to death and her stepfather to a new love and a move to Chicago, Illinois.

Harry Vale is Stella’s anthropology professor, also not much of a looker, though he is a good guy.

When a robbery gone wrong leaves Stella with a bullet in the brain, and in a coma, and Harry her professor with a bullet wound in his leg, something miraculous happens. Instead of being unconscious in her coma, Stella wakes up with a new beautiful body in peaceful Jarmo, a village that hasn’t existed for 9000 years. A village her professor had just finished their class up by talking about. Jarmo may be primitive by modern standards, but Stella loves everything about it, her new body, the new hunky Harry who ends up being her husband, and her new friends. In fact, Stella never wants to wake up, but instead, wants to stay in the peaceful village, and live out her days with Harry. There’s only one problem, Stella’s body back in the twenty-first century is starting to wake up and if she does wake up, she may not be able to get back to Jarmo and all those she now loves.

I truly enjoyed Dreamer by Jane Susann MacCarter and was initially fully willing to give it a 5 cup rating. The world building is fantastic, the descriptions of Jarmo spot on in my opinion for a village of that time, the author clearly did her research, and I loved how Stella was able to grow emotionally and learn there. I even enjoyed twenty-first century Harry’s emotional growth and how he treated Stella while she was in the coma. In fact, I loved everything about the story until I got to the end. The end completely blew me away, and not in a good way. I will not give the ending away, but suffice it to say that the author did a fantastic job of building the story up to the end, and then…leaving the reader hanging with no solutions to any of the problems presented by the story. It was like having a balloon be blown up and you are waiting for it to explode and rain confetti on you, and instead the air rushes out with a low whistle and that is it. That was a huge disappointment for me as a reader and that alone lowered the rating down to a 3 cup from a 5 cup. Now, that being said, this is still a good book, and very easy to read, and I did enjoy it, I just was not happy with the ending. If you enjoy reading about past civilizations, and pondering the idea of alternate realities and timelines, out of body experiences and these sorts of things then for those I can heartily recommend this book, it is worth reading.
