Ainsley Scott basically got left at the altar by her ex-fiancé Dale, but it served her a much needed wake up call. She quit her job as a lawyer on the track to be a partner and started her own business from her home, Odds and Ends, which she calls an executive concierge. Her friend Brie Lawson has pulled the friendship card to get her to break her no pets rule in her business when she agrees to help care for her parents’ dog, Roscoe, who currently is staying with her brother Jake while their parents are on a three month cruise. Brie got a call back for a part in Les Miserables in San Diego, and she needs Ainsley to help with Roscoe because her brother is a workaholic and does not want Roscoe to be neglected.
Jake Lawson owns one of the hottest clubs in New York, Top Shelf, and is in the process of trying to expand to the Miami’s South Beach area. He likes to play hard and work hard. He is proud and excited for his sister for getting the part, but is less than thrilled about having Roscoe in his professionally decorated loft.
Jake and Ainsley meet when he comes back from Miami to find her bent over in his living room scrubbing his rug and muttering about Roscoe under her breath about breaking her no pets rule. He is instantly attracted and she shuts him down just as quickly reminding him he is paying her handsomely for her services. The next time they bump into each other at his loft, sparks fly and the attraction is clearly two sided but a phone call interrupts them and she flees. A few days later he is injured at his club playing knight in shining armor to Ainsley and she ends up volunteering to stay with him while his arm and shoulder have to be in a sling to keep Brie from leaving San Diego. One game of strip scrabble later and they can not get enough of each other until he finds out he lost out on the property in Miami after turning off his phone to be with her and blames her for it.
This book was really easy to read and kept me interested and after I finished the book I was sad it was over. I would love to have more of all the characters in the story, Erin & Aaron, Mia (Ainsley’s BFF), Colin (Jake’s BFF) and Brie (Jake’s sister). Jake and Ainsley do not immediately jump each other but build up a little believable tension first. They have steamy chemistry and a lot in common. When she takes him to see Ferris Bueller’s Day Off at movies in the park, I decided I wanted to be her when I grew up. I have always loved the quote from the movie: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Ainsley is already living this motto, but Jake has to learn it the hard way.
