Bree and Steven debuted in my ’08 novel “Melodyâ€. I did not anticipate how much I’d love these characters nor did I anticipate how much fans would. In fact a lot of readers said they enjoyed the Bree and Steven subplot more than the main story. I fell in love with the characters instantly.
In “Melody†Bree and Steven’s goal was to find The Albany Predator, a sadistic rapist. The Albany Predator catches Bree in his web more than once and he soon marks her as his prime prey. By the end the rapist and Bree have their showdown with Steven saving the day. But of course, there is a major twist. You have to read “Melody†to find out.
I knew I had more in store for these characters because I got goose bumps every time I wrote their scenes. I couldn’t wait to take them on more adventures and push them to the limit. The thing I believe readers love about these characters is their bond. They get at each other’s throats over many things but in the end they are there for each other. The problem is both are extremely stubborn and at times you wanna reach through the pages and strangle them. LOL! They don’t lack in entertainment and certainly not sexual tension. These two, exes or not have red hot chemistry and your blood pressure rises every time they share a scene.
Check out this excerpt of “Giving up the Ghost†when Brianna is in Steven’s kitchen when he gets a mysterious phone call right after they’ve learned of Cheyenne Wilson’s attack.
Excerpt:
Ring! Ring!
“Ahh!†Brianna hovered in Steven’s arms.
“Bree? What the…â€
Ring! Ring!
She crept from his embrace. Her fingers dug into the counter behind her.
“Bree it’s just the phone.â€
Her eyes stayed on the kitchen doorway.
Ring! Ring!
“Bree look at me all right?†He shook her. “What’s going on?â€
“Aren’t you gonna answer it?â€
“No.â€
The ringing stopped.
Brianna inched to the doorway.
“Bree, you practically jumped outta ya’ damn skin now what’s going on?â€
Sweat filled her face.
“Bree look at me.â€
She did. Her eyes were on him but she didn’t seem quite there.
“Bree?†He grabbed her arms. “I’m worried about you. You jump when the phone rings at work and now you almost had a heart attack.â€
“It’s nothing.†She shoved his hands away.
“Bull—-. Tell me what’s going on with you.â€
“Just seemed strange that you’d get a call this late.†She tangled her fingers together. “Isn’t it strange to you?â€
“Not really. What’s strange is how you’ve been acting lately.â€
“I’m just under pressure.†She dabbed her face with the paper towel. “So much is going on. That molestation case we just wrapped up and now Cheyenne.â€
“No this is about you, Bree.â€
“Just leave it alone, Steven. Please.â€
“I can’t.†He put his arms around her. “I care about you too much to look the other way.â€
“Steven.â€
“And you know that. I don’t have to tell you. You know how I feel.†He brought his mouth to hers. “I can’t stop caring about ya’, Bree. I don’t want to.â€
“Steven stop it.†She turned her head. “I have a lot on my mind right now. This is the last thing I wanna think about right now.â€
“I won’t stop trying to get us back to where we used to be, Bree. Where we both want and need to be.â€
“I gotta go.â€
He blocked her. “But you don’t really want to do you?â€
She pried his hands from her waist. “Bye, Steve.â€
“You can’t run from this, Bree. I won’t let you.â€
She left.
End of Excerpt:
Look out for book 2 in the Bree and Steven series, The Season of Sin! Coming winter 2011!
Description:
Detective Brianna “Bree†Morris and her partner and ex-lover Steven Kemp are back. This time they are thrown head first into a gruesome homicide that brings forth as many secrets as it does clues.
Brianna’s psychiatrist, Dr. Nadia Hollister is stabbed to death in her upstairs bathroom. Brianna, who is at Nadia’s while the murder happens, is the only witness. Unfortunately she was knocked unconscious by the killer and only has the memory of the killer’s scent to go on.
Brianna and Steven sign on to help Homicide Detective Jayce Matthews solve the case. With Nadia’s journals as her guide, Bree learns that Nadia was keeping a devastating secret that has something to do with her adopted daughter. The renowned doctor was not whom she seemed to be and her secret may not have only got her killed but could ruin the foundation of her entire family.
The police hunt for suspects but Nadia’s secret could wreck the lives of many, all who have motive to kill her.
The deeper Brianna and Steven dig into Nadia’s past; the more they question whether Nadia was the true victim after all.
