My name is LaVerne Thompson. I’m a multi-published author and I write contemporary, fantasy and sci/fi romances. When I tell people I’m a published author they almost always want to know if I write fiction or nonfiction. When I tell them romance almost all grin. Then almost everyone ask where do I get my ideas or inspiration. But a few have asked what kind of romance? And they weren’t necessarily talking about the genre but the style. I say sensual, but that line is sometimes blurred with erotic elements.
I enjoy reading romances that epitomize the words to the theme song from Love Story. And if you haven’t seen the movie, I’d recommend it and keep a box of tissue next to you. For me a romance is all about the emotion, the feelings, the words. The developing relationship between the characters. Doesn’t matter if it’s contemporary, paranormal, suspense, sci/fi, etc. I prefer books that have a love story as the underlying theme. I try to write my stories that way, no matter the romance genre. I try to create first and foremost a love story between my main characters. I want my characters to be soul mates, but unlike the movie Love Story, I want there to be a happy ending. I know not everyone wants the same thing, thank you God! Just imagine how boring that would be, but for those times that you want to read love stories with happy endings that’s what I write about.
I’ll post a few excerpts in a bit, meanwhile what sorts of stories do you enjoy reading? Ones with HEAs or HFNs.

Hi from your new facebook friend!
You nailed it – it’s the emotion that makes the story stay with a reader. All the “keepers” on my shelf have that in common – no matter the genre. I love HEAs, esp. if they have to work for it.

14 years agoHi LaVerne,
Loved the blog. I am a die-hard romantic and like you all of my stories have happy endings. I love any genre that has HEAs. 😛

14 years ago AUTHORHi Renee- Thanks for stopping by. And same here. All the books I’ve kept over the years also have that in common. Too often real life isn’t about HEAs so I like the books I read for pleasure to have a healthy dose of it.

14 years agoThis might be a silly question – but what does HFN stand for?

14 years agoI know that you have been to a RT convention. What is the best thing about going and what were you most surprised by.
Also, is there a genre that you want to try you hand at that you haven’t yet? What is the longest book you have ever written?

14 years agoAnother HEA girl here, but I can take a Happy For Now ending too, in fact, the story I’m writing now will have a HFN ending. Sometimes I just get tired of the engagement, wedding, baby endings. KWIM?
I love books with a strong, Alpha male who isn’t overpowering. He’s sexy, smart, brave and in need of a little taming. Yum …

14 years agoHi, LaVerne. Romance is so diverse these days, I think a LOT of people read it and don’t really understand that what they are reading is in the romance genre. You can pretty well find something for any and every taste. I have to agree with you 1000% though, the real joy in the story is the evolution of an intense, passionate, soul-deep love that you know will change lives forever. That’s the kind of story that makes you smile and sigh when you put it down, and it’s the best love story there is!!! Keep writing them, Lady – not enough of them in the world!!!
Love & Hugs,
Denyse

14 years agoOh, then I guess I like reading stories with either type of ending. The HFN endings can lead to intriguing sequels!

It’s called escapism for a reason. *g* Soaps ate too strange and not everyone wants to read Oprah book club fodder!
Keep it up, hon, the great work and all. Readers are reading!

14 years ago AUTHORMarie- Yes I’ve been to RT and wasn’t really surprised that I’d have fun. I’m very social, but what surprised me was how tired I was. Not from all the fun I had at night but also from all the net working going on during the day. I met so many really great people who were readers and authors. That was truly a lot of fun and worth the trip.
And it was also great meeting my cover model Jimmy Thomas up close and personal. Whoa! LOL

14 years ago AUTHORDenyse thanks and as long as you and other like you are also writing the world will be just fine. LOL

14 years ago AUTHORInteresting Margo. Never thought in terms of the sequels like that. But I see your point. But for me at the end I’d still like an HEA for the couple although in some cases that might be a trio for some.

14 years agoHey LaVerne,
I think that’s why I like to read and watch Romantic stories/movies. The emotion between the characters. I love watching the story develop. I want to know it’s going to end happy, but I want to see how they get there.
