Personally, I loved writing a sweet romance (usually my stuff is a bit steamy!) that featured a new lady boxer. A what now? Yep, I write about women boxers, and I love to tell everyone the history of women’s boxing. It’s a little known subject, and one that often doesn’t fit with the ideas of women’s roles at the time of Jane Austen. But they were there! In “A Footman’s Mistake,” we see the non-aristocracy, and Ruby is our up-and-coming fighter, searching for a sponsor (and maybe her dad?), while wandering around an extremely fancy party. She finally gets to see an actual ruby dangling on someone’s ear, so she can see her namesake. And Max, well, Max is a footman with ideas. That is, until he accidentally spills the buttered parsnips on her dress. He’s not as smooth as he pretends to be.
