A few thoughts on my debut novel and the journey it began. Windmaster started off as a short story. But the characters refused to leave me alone. And I will
admit the lure of magic called until a series of four novels came to life. Two of the inspirations behind Windmaster came from divergent sources. Ellspeth would fit nicely with the Louis L’Amour’s quote about “a woman to walk beside me, not behind me. ” Unlike some heroines, Ellspeth would be as likely to rescue the hero as to be rescued herself.
The second quote hung above my desk came from the movie, Striking Distance and was paraphrased above in the carving above the door of the office of the leader
of the House of Cszabo, who also happened to be Ellspeth’s mother. So it was not only inspiration for Ellspeth’s character, but also those of her kin. That is not the end of the use of
Lt. Vincent Hardy’s words, “Loyalty before all else except honor.” They are also a perfect match for Dal’s character.
Revenge set Ellspeth, captain of Sea Falcon, and the archmage, Dal, on the path to her destiny, but prophecy controlled the journey.
Despite his insolent attitude, she is attracted to the dark-haired dockworker named Dal she hires to help unload the vessel’s cargo. The supposed dockhand reveals
himself as her passenger and a wizard. Saving Sea Falcon from a deadly storm leaves him near death and forces Ellspeth to make an untenable decision. Deny
her latent powers and let him die or accept the consequences. For to have magic she must give up the sea, her ship, and her captaincy. Dal and magic have
another risk associated with them, a cult determined to rid the world of magic and all who wield it.
Dal has his own reasons for Ellspeth to embrace her powers. She is the key to obtain the magic talismans needed to avenge the murdered students and instructors under his charge.
Trapped within the cult’s stronghold, Ellspeth must choose between her own survival, saving the future of magic… or love.

I’m a former feature-story writer and correspondent, but my first love is fiction. The
descendent of a coal-miner’s daughter and an aviation flight engineer, my
writing reflects the contrasts of my heritage and crosses genres from
historical adventures and westerns to science fiction and fantasy. In the world
of fantasy romance, I am the author of the Dragshi Chronicles and The
Windmaster Novels. My stand-alone novels include the dragon magic fantasy, Fire and Amulet, and the dark fantasy, Imprisoned in Stone.
