The Editors Speak: Steampunk Submissions

As steampunk and steampunk romance became an “It” genre, editors began putting out calls for stories. For readers, the editors’ enthusiasm meant more books to enjoy!

I contacted a few small press/digital-first publishers whom I know list steampunk/steampunk romance in their submission guidelines. I invited them to describe what kind of stories they wanted to see in their submission inbox, only with more detail than the usual “a great story.”

Editors from Carina Press and Lyrical Press responded. Carina Press has released a number of steampunk and steampunk romances from authors such as Cindy Spencer Pape, Robert Appleton, J.K. Coi, P.G. Forte, Jenny Schwartz, and Stacy Gail.

Lyrical Press’ steampunk authors include Kaitlin R. Branch, Elysabeth Williams, Ella Drake, Regina Riley, and–in the interest of full disclosure–me, Heather Massey.

The editors listed below are looking for all kinds of steampunk stories and elements. Here’s what they had to say:

Carina Press

Bryon Quertermous

Courting Trouble by Jenny SchwartzDo you want to see action-adventure steampunk romance or stories that are more character-driven?

I want to see both, ideally. Action without character is boring and steampunk doesn’t really lend itself to true character studies.

What about stories mixing steampunk with paranormal elements? Fantasy-steampunk-romance hybrids?

I really like steampunk crossed with paranormal elements like Hellboy and the HYDRA aspects of Captain America. I also like steampunk crossed with noir and mystery elements.

Are you looking for stand-alone titles or a series?

Both.

What type of steampunk technology
excites you? Automatons? Airships? Steampunk cyborgs?

I love the WW2 era steampunk with airships and art deco technology. I don’t much care for robots or cyborgs. I like flying and weapons technology the most.

What kind of settings pique your interest? UK based steampunk? What about the American Old West? Non-Western settings?

I’m kind of over UK steampunk. I want to see more US stuff, particularly NYC or Chicago during prohibition. What about Detroit? Or small town steampunk like The Rocketeer. I also like the old West as well.

Describe the types of heroes and heroines you want to meet (or don’t want!)

I like any and all heroes and heroines if they’re drawn well, but I could do without seeing any more spies unless they’re REALLY unique.

Deborah Nemeth

I’m actively seeking clockpunk (Renaissance-era/pre-Industrial), Victorian/Edwardian steampunk, and interwar period dieselpunk with or without romantic elements. In a steampunk submission, I want to see solid, layered world-building, stories that are rooted in the setting, and characters that are formed by their gear- or steam-driven worlds. I don’t want stories that could just as easily occur at any other time or place, or a paranormal romance with a few airships tossed in.

I prefer steampunk in a historical setting rather than a fantasy world, and I enjoy strong science fiction, historical and/or alternate-history elements. I also love steampunk mystery, suspense and action-adventure.

I’m happy to acquire stand-alone titles although fabulous world-building often deserves to be developed into a series. While any tone from lighthearted to dark might catch my fancy, a submission has to have compelling characters, strong conflict and high stakes to hold my interest.

Lyrical Press

Antonia Tiranth

Clockwork sand CorsetsDo you want to see action-adventure steampunk romance or stories that are more character-driven?

I like a combination of both. I want action but I also want the characters to be real and involved, not just strung along by events.

What about stories mixing steampunk with paranormal elements? Fantasy-steampunk-romance hybrids?

I love the fantasy-steampunk. It adds more depth.

Are you looking for stand-alone titles or a series?

Either.

What type of steampunk technology excites you? Automatons? Airships? Steampunk cyborgs?

I’m partial to the cyborgs.

What kind of settings pique your interest? UK based steampunk? What about the American Old West? Non-Western settings?

It can be based anywhere. Location doesn’t matter as much as a good story and well rounded characters.

Describe the types of heroes and heroines you want to meet (or don’t want!)

I like alpha males and strong females. Please NO damsels in distress!  Or fainting flowers.

Tone–dark/angsty, lighthearted, or somewhere in-between?

The tone could be anything. I’m not partial to any particular tone.

Penny Barber

Do you want to see action-adventure steampunk romance or stories that are more character-driven?

Punk begs for strong character arcs, because without them who incites rebellion or defiance? How can a character lead a movement or have a great romance without changing, growing, learning? Steam technology sitting idle without action and adventure? Romance which doesn’t change characters? Rebellion without action? Steampunk Romance needs a blend of both.

What about stories mixing steampunk with paranormal elements? Fantasy-steampunk-romance hybrids?

Either. Both. Shaken, not stirred, please.

Are you looking for stand-alone titles or a series?

Either.

What type of steampunk technology excites you? Automatons? Airships? Steampunk cyborgs?

Any. What excites me is the purpose behind the invention, the statement the inventor wanted to make with it, what happens when it falls into the wrong hands or has horrible side effects.

What kind of settings pique your interest? UK based steampunk? What about the American Old West? Non-Western settings?

I have a soft spot for Victorian.

Describe the types of heroes and heroines you want to meet (or don’t want!)

Characters motivated to incite change, instead of merely react to it. Villains who are equally motivated. Characters who do instead of think.

Tone–dark/angsty, lighthearted, or somewhere in-between?

I like both, but I don’t want to be stuck in an angst-filled head for a dozen pages, not even a whole page. I want to see characters battle the angst, not think about it and wallow in woe.

***

And there you have it!

Here are the submission guidelines for the participating publishers:

Carina Press

Lyrical Press

If any other editors are in the cafe, I invite you to let us know what kind of steampunk/steampunk romances you’d like to consider.

I have always loved books but discovered romance books later in life while home with a sick child thanks to my best friend, Brenda. It didn't take long to meet up with Karen and learn that we shared a lot more than a love of books. We are sisters in spirt who want to help people spread the word about books. KarenneLyn is the web designer of Coffee Time Romance and several other sites. This wonderful exploration of her creative side has become a fun thing to learn and opened the door to meeting some wonderful people.

Designing the Perfect Romance Cast Register by April 29th and save $5, use code ROMANCECASTKNIGHT2024 at checkout! In this brand-new month-long online class, New York Times bestselling author Angela Knight discusses the importance of creating the perfect cast for the kind of romance you’re trying to write.

A memorable romance cast is more than the sum of its parts. To create an effective book, all the characters – protagonists, antagonists, and minor characters – must work together as a unit. And each must fit the kind of book you’re trying to write. Leatherface of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre does not belong in a Rom Com. Nor do you want minor characters to steal the book.

But how do you create a good cast for this particular book and the audience you’re aiming for?

Angela discusses how to design your heroic couple for each other, along with the minor characters and sidekicks who help make the protagonists three-dimensional.

She’ll also talk antagonists and their henchmen, and how to use them to create tension and excitement.

Next, she’ll explore dialogue, humor and arguments as a way to develop character and conflict.

The result will be a firm foundation for your book so you won’t be flailing in the dark, trying to figure out why the heck your book isn’t working.

Lessons in this month-long online class will be posted on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, students may email scenes to Angela for her private critique and suggestions.

Rocket: My life pretty much took a hard left a year ago when I first met Lemon. She’s wise beyond her years and as abrasive and sarcastic as they come. The second she busts my VP’s balls -- literally -- I know I’d never be able to forget her. A year later I’m still infatuated with the vicious woman. When she runs off to charge hell with a water pistol, I’m right behind her wondering how we’re gonna get out of this one alive. But I have a smile on my face and a determination to give this woman anything she wants. Even if it means some things in my club are going to have to change.

Lemon: Look. This is supposed to be all about how Rocket caught my eye and I decided I wanted him but there were obstacles and… phfffffff… Forget all that. What you need to know is when people are stupid, they need a kick in the… Crap. I’m not supposed to swear here. Grrrrr! Anyway, this is where I come in. Grim Road needs fixing. I’m not exactly qualified to do club… garbage, but Rocket? Yeah. I might have decided I’ll keep him, so… I’m great at whipping people into shape. Grim Road, meet Lemon. See me, love me, MF’ers.

Rocket: Just pass me the beer and popcorn…

Lemon: I’m settling in at Grim Road in my role as vice president. The men test me, but it’s all in good fun. I think I enjoy it as much as they do. Then, out of nowhere, things go horribly sideways. I realize how much weaker I am physically than everyone else in the club. That weakness can be a horrible liability. Yeah. Things are going great. Until they aren’t. I may have bitten off more than I can chew…

Rocket: My little sourpuss is a force to be reckoned with. She takes everything dished out to her and gives it back in spades. She’s my VP, but she’s also my old lady. Sometimes, I need to take care of her. More importantly, she has to let me. That fact is never more apparent than when a small team of roughnecks think she’s a woman from another club.

A new relic hunt. A new evil…

Resident Relic Hunter for Deva’s Fae Council is a title Bethany Aodhán never wanted, but it isn’t like she has a choice. And in truth, the appointment might just aid her quest to find her mother’s murderers—because at least one of those responsible is a member of the council, and getting access to their records could give her the connection and their identity.

But before she can be given her first task or even start her behind-the-scenes hunt, a building belonging to Cynwrig Lùtair—the highborn dark elf who is not only her council liaison but lover—is set alight, and they barely escape with their lives.
