I love to read contemporary m/m romances. I have written a few contemporaries – Woodland Village series and Out of Bounds. I'm currently writing a short novella that is set in Vienna and is contemporary. It's going to be a challenge to write short – because I only have 15K words to get my readers to fall in love with Andre and Leo. Ugh. I'm biting my nails at such a challenge. Because it's a challenge for me. I tend to have elaborate plots that my CP is always telling me to simplify!
Keep It Simple Sweetie – ahem – refuse to use 'stupid'…is my mantra these days. Okay, so this is simple:
Boy meets boy (already there's a history between them).
Boy and boy feel the sexual tension between them.
Boy and boy get it on.
Boy and boy have a lovey dovey few days.
Boy and boy break up!
Boy and boy realize they can't live without each other.
There…that's my story line/plot or whatever you want to call it.
Some authors are masters at writing short – they just know how to lead up to that sizzling middle and make it believable.
I like world building, creating cultures and taking pages to build the attraction between my characters ~ but I'm excited to try my hand at doing this with fewer words. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I'll pull it off, but then, I have a great editor!
