Ruth Warren is a newlywed age twenty-one and is starting her new life in a small Texas oil town. Sadly their happiness is cut short when her husband Charlie dies in an explosion on an oil rig. Not knowing what to do or where to go, she finds herself devastated and moves back home with her parents.

Ruth soon finds another chance at life by going to college in California. It is hard work but she will make her dream of being a teacher come true. However, once again Ruth finds herself in a bad situation. Her saving grace comes in the form of friend Thomas.

With Thomas, and a few other friends, Ruth settles in with Mexican migrant farmworkers in a camp just east of Los Angeles. She helps teach the children and sees first hand the injustices many of the migrant workers and their family face. It is so different from any life she could have imagined. Ruth and Thomas work together to try to make a difference but is it too little to late?

Broken Ground is definitely a book worth reading. It is filled with a roller coaster of emotions and trials and joys. Ruth’s journey is both sad and uplifting but truly an inspiring one. It has given a voice to a time where there was such controversial issues at hand; ones that also may ring true today; forming a variety of opinions both good and bad. At times we all need to broaden our horizons and this book will do just that.
