Bernadine Brown has had better luck in business than in love. Her vision has turned the town of Henry Adams around but has not seemed to make much of an impact on Mal July.
Mal July is a recovering alcoholic, reformed player, and regretful embezzler. He has a long way to go to win back the respect of the townspeople and the love of Bernadine.
Mal is doing the best he can to pay back the town the money he stole and got conned out of. He has lost the respect of most of the people he loves and does not know if they will ever trust him again. He is hoping for a second chance. Homecoming Weekend will be an eventful one for all.
As is the case in most of Ms. Jenkins’ novels, there are several story-lines woven together to make an engrossing book. The main characters have a great deal to overcome to get back together and this is the theme of the book, second chances. The primary subplot has storekeeper Gary Clark hopefully reuniting with his high school sweetheart. Many of the characters from previous novels make appearances, making this trip to Henry Adams even more enjoyable. As with all of her novels, this one has an African American perspective but the story is relatable to all.
